GMT-Master II - Interesting Noise

Ok, so am I obsessive, but one should be when paying over $5K for a watch!

Take watch off wrist, and hold band tightly so it does not rattle in any way. Now move watch back and forth near your ear. You will hear the predictable sound of the rotor moving back and forth which winds the watch. But I also hear what sounds like a small BB (ball bearing) sound, almost like something is loose in there.

Tell me this is normal.

is doing. Mine is right now at the RSC, this is not normal. Have it service asap. I should get mine back next week. My guess our watch got pass the quality check, even though it should not. Nothing the RSC can't fix.

Are you sure it's not the normal sound of the rotor? It sounds loose, but perhaps other GMT II's sound the same way. Anyone else with a 3186 movement want to comment?

I'm sure, the RSC Tech told me its not normal. Mine sounds exactly like a bearing or some kind of small part loose when I shake it. It drove me crazy, just bought the watch couple of weeks ago. Can't believe its happening to a Rolex, at any rate Rolex factory is not perfect. Get it service you'll be happy.
The sub kept running, its weird, built like a tank.

Guys, I think I found the answer. Bo explained it perfectly (like a small glass ball moving in a tube).

I read the thread. Mine makes the noise either way, shaking it 9 to 3 and 12 to 6. Goodluck

I think if I took off the bracelet, the sound would go away. There are simply too many people that have had the same issue, and it's the end-link sound, not the watch itself.

If you can isolate the noise as definitely coming from the rotor it is not normal. Mine is in the shop right now for the same reason and having several parts replaced including the reverser.

I was able to hold the end-links tightly and there is no noise coming from the watch case. So in this case, as was in so many cases, it's coming from the bracelet.

Hi saw this being referred to in a similar post as a sound that is similar to a bearing rolling in a glass tube (good characterization). My 116710 has the same noise, but my older D series 16710 also has a similar noise with the oyster band removed (removing any confusion with bracelet noise).

I think its okay.... It has not affected any workings of the watch as far as I can tell.

Sheldon, which one is the D series? I have the latest 16710 (not 116710). What series is mine? My S/N is Z36xxxx

Greg, your watch is a Z series. The letter in the serial number indicates the series.

My 116710 is a Z series (they are only available as Z or the newer M)

The 16710 (traditional) is a D series....
