How much should I pay?
I have finally decided to take the plunge and buy my first rolex. I joined here because it is an incredible wealth of knowledge. I was hoping for some advice from you guys that know far more than I do about this subject.
I want to start with a used rolex. The model I want is the two tone submariner with the blue face. I have looked for the last few weeks on here and a few other sites. I have seen prices ranging from $5000 up to $10000. I know the price varies by model number and condition but in the pictures, I don't see much difference between the watches that are half the price. What am I missing? I know this is an incredibly subjective question but how much would you spend if you were buying a used model of the watch I am looking at? |

As you said this depends on the age and condition. The newer ones have an upgraded bracelet and clasp which a lot of people prefer. This will be one reason for the higher price. The more important thing for you to do is "buy the seller". Regardless of how new or what price you need to do your homework with respect to the seller. Check references etc. Then work with them to find your watch. Good luck with the hunt.

Buy the newest one on the best condition you can afford.
the price ranges you see are likely based on the age of the watch.

It will take more time to learn all the differences than you may have patience. I would second Rick's comment to "buy the seller" first.
There are some people who might create a watch that "looks" right - but really isn't. Maybe look at the trusted TRF sellers for a fair deal.

Just keep studying about that sub you want and don't rush into anything, there are plenty of watches out there

Seems like I have a lot more research to do. I will definitely buy from a trusted seller. Is there a trusted seller on these boards that does business in West Palm Beach that anyone would care to recommend?

My advice is to ensure you get any used Rolex authenticated. I bought a DJ from a seller on TRF with a good reputation but the bracelet was questionable when I had it authenticated. Not necessarily the fault of the seller but still a point to be vigilant about.
Good hunting! |

I'll definitely have it authenticated. I would love to buy it brand new but it is more than I am willing to spend right now. I need to stay around $8000 and I can't get near a new one for that amount of money I would suspect. |

DavidSW is in Orlando. I just bought a NIB 116613 TT Sub c black face from him. It was shipped over night to PA. I highly Recommend DavidSW

The Subs around the $9-10k price point will be the newer "Ceramic" Subs... Has a few nice upgrades which include a scratch proof ceramic bezel, updated clasp and thicker lugs. Also, the blue is a lighter blue then the non Ceramic versions.

I have one more question. I've been doing my research and decided I want the newer sub-c instead of the older model.
However, I've started strongly considering getting a blue dial Roman numeral date just 2 instead. While looking and researching I've slowly found myself leaning more towards the DJ. Am I crazy? Could some of you more knowledgable guys walk me through the pros and cons between the two watches I'm considering? I really like the DJ but the two tone blue submariner is the watch I've wanted for years. Seems like I would be making a mistake changing my mind after all these years of waiting. |

I like both the 16613 and the DJII that you mentioned. Both are on my list as I too am looking for another/different Rolex. The only thing about the DJII with the blue roman dial that I found to be a draw back was, that it doesn't have any lume. Maybe that isn't a big deal to you. It certainly is a great looking piece, but that may bother some people.

I love the 16613 myself the best. I think the blue color is so much better looking. I would definitely stay newer than a 1999 model so you get the gold through the clasp. I have seen them on here from some trusted sellers as low as $5000 in good condition. That is what I would do and it would leave $3000 left I ER for your next watch purchase.
Good luck with your choice and post some pics once you get one.

Just know, whatever one you decide to buy you will love it.
Then you will start wondering if you shouldn't get the other one as well |

The Subc is better built than the old Bluesy but the blue sunburst dial on that is far more beautiful and so would tempt me to buy that instead. Why not get that for around $5000 and save towards the DJ, soon youll have the best of both worlds.

For a first time buyer I would save and buy new from a trusted seller like DavidSW. Looks like you are almost there anyways! IMO Nothing beats deflowering a Rolex! Good luck and WELCOME aboard!!!

I would make sure the watch has been serviced, or factor a good servicing into the price. The new models feel a lot different than the older models. Cant wait to see what you decide on!

Gotta go with what you've been dreaming about for years. IMHO I'd go with the SubC TT Blue dial. It also happens to my favorite since I was a kid.

If you don't know Rolex, your best bet is a "trusted seller" here.
The used market can be a real "jungle" and lessons don't come cheap.

I PM'd David last night and he sent me a message with the prices for both watches I am interested in. I've PM'd him back asking if he has both in stock so I can try them on at the same time and make my choice that way. I happen to be in Orlando, which is where he is located, about once a month so it shouldn't be too long before I buy either one. I have decided to pony up the money and buy bnib. I've gone back and forth about buying a used watch but I have decided that I've waited for years to be able to afford one and I want a brand new one. For my first rolex it seems like I should dip my toes in the water with a used one but, to hell with it. |
