More Babies!

Well, I am stuck! With Isaac and the extremely warm year, we have had a bumper crop of baby grey squirrels. I stopped officially rehabbing wildlife 15 years ago, but I help out when we have a bad year.

Well, I am an hour from the nearest licensed rehabbers, all the New Orleans people have at least 20 babies, still, that will need to be over wintered because they are too small to be released before the cold weather.

I thought I was out of the woods, but got 3 babies in the last week. None of my contacts can take them. It has been almost 20 years since I built a cage. My husband does not participate in the wildlife stuff. SOOOOO, I am in process of building a cage. Hehehe, thought I would share for those interested.

I am using 1 x .5 inch wire with crab trap (hog rings) rings as fasteners and fence posts as a frame. Not finished yet, still have to put in a shelf, door, top, bottom and nestbox. It should do for the winter.....

The hubby wasn't laughing after the progress I made so far....I will be finishing it for Thanksgiving, instead of roasting a turkey....

Ferrets and Raccoons don't eat people....

Squirrels don't make good pets....they like to throw their food around, they also like to pee and poop out the side of the cage. They are in a dog crate right now and I do laundry 2 times a day for them.

So I am in a rush to have them outside. When puberty hits they get mean and they bite. So by spring they will be ready to be released.

They are cute. My wife has done the same thing with squirrels and you are right, they don't make good pets. They are dirty and they do bite and to be so small, there bites really hurt. Lol

Is all I can say about these two cases is that they are suspicious (from the parental stand point) and there is usually a lot of information that isn't in the press release, that explains why a wild animal was running loose and in proximity to a baby human.

Raccoons don't break into homes and eat babies, in fact raccoons usually avoid people unless they cornered. I have had a raccoon come after me and was able to diffuse the situation entirely. Now, if people are keeping wildlife, including ferrets and they are not caged or handled appropriately they can hurt any member of a house hold. Ferrets are non domesticated, wild animals.

Dogs kill people too. Any animal with teeth that is large enough can kill a baby if it has the opportunity.

For the last 25 years, I have worked with cats, dogs, exotic wildlife, birds, wild animals and reptiles of North America. I have never had an animal hurt me seriously. The worst injuries I have sustained have been from either injured or sick pet dogs.

I would not advise anyone to have any animal in their home that is loose and could get any where near any childor infant.
