2007/2008 Rolex Price Rises
Dear All,
I am very new to this forum. I have just been speaking with an Authorised Rolex Dealer here in Melbourne, Australia regarding my intended purchase of a S/S GMT Master II. The current price here for the S/S GMT is $8790($Aus). This does not factor in any discount yet. I was advised that if I intended to purchase the S/S Sub there would be an approximate discount of 5%. The Sub here retails for $7290 ($Aus). Further, I was advised that Rolex has had a recent price rise which has flowed on to the Hong Kong area. I was also advised that there may be an increase here in Australia between 5% - 8% overall. Does anyone in this forum have knowledge of Rolex price increases that are starting to flow through to consumers? Any advice would be great. Trying to find out when the increase may happen here in Australia was like trying to pull teeth with a set of pliers. Perhaps, the sales person was not sure when and if the increase may hit Australia. I have placed an order for the S/S GMT II, but I may have to wait at least 10 - 12 months. A further question to all if I may. Over time (investment), will a Sub increase in value more that a GMT II or not. I have been advised by the AD that a Sub in good condition should increase in value more than a Sub over the years, but I just love the look and feel of the S/S GMT II. Especially, the ceramic maxi-dial. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards to TRF. |

Welcome Oscar
No one knows for sure when a price increase will occur. As to which watch model Sub or GMTIIC will rise more is anyones guess. I would get the watch that you really like the most. If you can't get your watch now locally, then I would look abroad. Always deal with a reputable seller. |

Welcome to TRF Michael. I'll try to answer some of your questions.
1. Australian retail prices for Rolex are quite high compared to some other places in the world such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia. As a general rule, the price will only go up, and if one can afford it, one should pull the trigger when they've decided which watch they want. 2. The AD generally would not be told about the price increase until they are told, meaning, it's a pretty sudden thing, and any advance warning would be around a month or so. 3. With regards to the Sub vs GMT II investment prospects, in my opinion the Sub is always in demand due to its iconic status (my own icon serves as a daily beater), and the second hand market shows that. The GMT II is still too new an item to assess. 4. If you can't wait 10-12 months, maybe you should plan a holiday to Hong Kong or Malaysia or Singapore and buy your Rolex over here while you're at it, killing two birds with one stone and picking up a cheaper Rolex. GMT II were at a premium a while back but they are showing up more and more nowadays, with slow price drops. Typical sale price now for an SS GMT-II is around AUD7,700.00, although that might go up if the Aussie dollar takes a dip due to the virgin government that's just been elected!! |

Welcome to TRF, Oscar!
I had a talk with my AD about coming price increases just 4 days ago when I got my SS Daytona regulated. He said that they did know when the price increase comes, but he also stated that the SS GMT IIc, for example, is already set with "updated price", meaning that this model would probably NOT be increased further in price, at least not with the coming price increase (when ever that may happen). He included the Milgauss as one of the models with "already updated prices".

Welcome to TRF Michael:
Yes unfortunately Rolex prices here in Australia are a bit high to say the least. I too recommend you take a short holiday to Hong Kong where you should be able to secure a GMT Master II from one of the many AD's over there. I'm not sure about the GMT, but the Sea-Dweller is around 17.5% cheaper there than in Brisbane. Even less if it's NOS. Also try to be the first customer of the day in the shop. 好运 Cheers Steve |

Thanks for all the 'good' advice. With work commitments and home renovations etc, I really cannot afford the time to slip overseas with the wife. I am content to wait for the GMT Master II here in Melbourne and pay the required price.
The overall price is not a huge thing for me. I am more intent on getting a precision time piece that I can wear all the time. I originally had my heart set on the TT Sub with blue face/bezel. When I saw it in the flesh and compared its looks against the GMT, I was hooked on the GMT. cheers, Michael |

Michael,
Welcome to the forum, I strongly agree with Steve nobody but Rolex knows if there will be a price increase. My AD told me the same information. I was of course looking at buying a new Rolex so I am somewhat skeptical about the information. With the U.S. dollar at an all time low who knows. I don't know what the situation will be in Australia. On a side note I love your country. Fine people and one of America's strongest friends. |

The new SS GMT-IIc is available here in Auckland for NZ$9975. The Sub-date 16610 is listed at NZ$8200 but is discountable. Cheers - JJ
