SubC and GMTIIC in same collection OVERKILL??
Hi all. I would very much appreciate your thoughts on the following:
1. Do you think having both a SubC and GMTIIC in the same collection of several watches (rolex/non-rolex) "repetitive" at all in light of similarities in case/bezel/face, etc.? 2. Does your answer change if one of the two is TT or Gold (black face gold watches only)? 3. Would you consider trading a Daytona (v series) for a TT GMTIIC? I've been thinking about rounding out my collection and have too many thoughts in my mind! Thank you for the input and have a great SUNDAY.

If you like them both, then by all means, they both belong in your collection! I buy and collect what I enjoy owning and wearing.......and I recommend you consider doing the same. Hope this helps, for at the end of the day, they are for your enjoyment, right!

I'm very happy with my WG SubC & YG GMTIIc and find them not at all repetitive. The same is true of steel versions for me.

No, in fact I think having a couple of versions of the same watch is ok, say 1 in SS then 1 in TT , 1 in YG and maybe one in RG, it's your collection and I hope you enjoy it

If you are looking for a diverse watch collection there might be other GMT options in the Rolex line that could give you greater variation. But if you like both the SS Sub and GMT then by all means get them both. They wear differently and have different heritages. In for one would get one of the two models in two tone but that is because variation in a collection is important to me. Other people would say a collection is defined by having many of the same model. The short answer is with Rolex, each model particularly in the sports line has a different feel and although there are arching similarities you will regret not getting one if you pick something else you are less enthused about.
Ironically I passed up a GMT to get a Navitimer which I now regret a little but when I bought my next Rolex I went with an Explorer II because it was so different from my Sub. Logic never wins once you get the bug. |

No problem having both a Sub and GMT. I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise because I have both.
If you want more of a different look then TT for one is a good way to go. Personally I'd go TT in the GMT rather than the Sub. I would prefer a Sub and GMT over a Sub and Daytona, but I love the GMT and am not big on Daytonas or chronographs in general. But that's just me and ymmv.

Agree, the GMT wears slightly dressier in it's new ceramic build and PCL bracelet. If you go two tone that's the way to go.

Yes, those two watches are similar in many ways but they are also different enough for me to own both of them.

Speaking for myself (of course):
1) A bit repetitive perhaps in terms of general appearance, but I'm more into appreciating each model for the differences. I wouldn't hesitate to have each in my collection because they are designed for two different purposes. 2) Every time I tell myself I don't like TT Rolexes, I begin to appreciate them more. However, despite the similarities, I'd rather have each in SS. 3) I really (really) love chronos, so I would have a Daytona first then the GMT then the Sub. All opinions based on today's feelings. Subject to change...! |

And that is exactly my reasoning as well. The nature and function of the GMT lends itself a bit more to being dressed up (think pilot or world traveler) versus the Sub (think salvage diver or knocking it on coral reef). And since the GMT has PCL's anyway it is more so the better candidate for going TT because if you go TT with the Sub you forfeit the brushed center links (which I prefer on SS models) - then have two watches with PCLs. And now they are a little more the same rather than a little more different. I like having the brushed CLs for knocking around and the SS Sub suits that purpose.

Not at all. Very different look n serve different function. The lugs are visibly thinner in GMT-c and bezel inserts are very different. Unless u brush the GMT-C's bracelet, that is another significant distinction.
So enjoy both if u love them both.

If it brings you joy that is all that matters. They are two different watches and you can and should enjoy both of them.

Well, IMO, the TT GMTIIc is the best TT in the lineup. Would go great with a Submariner.

I am lucky to have both in my small collection and don't have any issue with them looking similar etc - "land, sea and air", what more could you want

The sub c and the GMT IIc are my 2 favourite watches in the current Rolex line up and I would have no reservations in owning both of them. The fact they are similar just reflects the style of watch I like. Being a flipper is also not really part of my DNA. If I owned a Daytona I'd have bought it after long and careful consideration and probably wouldn't want to part with it. I'd keep saving to add the GMT IIc. This idiosyncratic attitude, of course, may not apply to you at all! |

1. Yes. As a former owner of both, I'd feel better about having the two if one was modern and one vintage or #2 below.
2. No. Different metals would be a good reason to own both in my book. 3. No. That's my own personal preference between the watches. I'm also not a fan of two tone. Good luck with your decision! |

Definately NOT overkill.
Many around here have both in their collection, and yes I would trade a SS Daytona towards a TT GMT-C. |

First off not a Subc fan.
One in TT or 18kt gold and one in SS would be very cool. Two in SS not for me. |

Having both in SS doesn't make much sense to me. They're very similar. Owning one in TT would change my answer a bit but I don't think I'd own a TT unless it was the GMT 2c. A TT Sub defeats the purpose.

Having both in SS would not be worth it to me, they are both pretty similar so you would pick a favourite and never use the other! One YG and one SS or TT would make a lot more sense however, as there is a number of circumstances where the YG would not be appropriate and you could use the SS, for example.
