Position of your watch at night..

Hi all,

I think I remember seeing somewhere about how your rolex will loose/gain seconds depending on how u position it over night.. Is this right?

If so... Anyone know the positions?

I do believe this is the "official" Rolex instructions

And no, I won't make any smart comments about "nightime positions".

I believe the information is in the booklet(s) that come with the watches.

Basically: crown up - losses slightly
dial up - gain slightly
crown down - gain more

Not all watches are effected like this though, and (apparently) it has greater effect on movements with a lower BPM. I should test my Speedmaster pro against my Rolexes and see if there's a difference...if I could be bothered! Haha!

What about dial face down ???
I was under the impression that the orientation a watch is left in, is only relevent to non Microstella watches.
Am i right or wrong ??

Well Rolex has been using the Microstella balance type wheel for many many decades all the present movements use the same system as did the 15 series and 3 series.But these timing positions were more effective on the slow beat movements 18000BPH, 19800BPH, the high beat 28800 BPH like the cal 3135 are not so much effected by resting positions, although its possible many could lose or gain a second or so .The two smaller Microstella screws make adjustments of one second for each turn, and the larger Microstella, two seconds for one turn, but rate adjustment on the balance wheel its around a max of 30-50 seconds either way.And you need a microstella special tool and a timing machine although its quite a easy job if not skilled best left to the professionals

Since Rikki spent the proper time regulating my Sub, it now doesn't vary more than .50 seconds in any position. Most positions are neutral.

my new 116610 looses about a second/day while im wearing it - and gains about a second over night when i leave it in the dial up position. As a result, the watch has been virtually at +0 since i originally set it back in December.

Its luck of the draw as each watch is slightly different in its timekeeping behavior, i got lucky in this regard.

Vertically with crown up on Sub. If I leave flat with crystal up, it gains 3 secs.

For years I would set my Rolex on the bracelet clasp, dial up. I found that setting it crown up, on its side, keeps the watch within COSC spec. It will be going to the Dallas RSC for a spa month soon. I will have to learn all over again the favored condition for maximum accuracy. At least this forum has given me the knowledge about nightime watch positions!

Maybe..... I have used one for years with great if not outstanding results in my service report after 15 years. Do a search on the topic. I think the reduced wear and tear on the crown is worth it alone.
