Confession Time: I Used to Hate Rolex

Hi all,

I feel like I'm in need of a cathartic experience. I've recently become completely obsessed with Rolex; I have a 16610LV, a Tudor 79090, and now I'm on the look out for a 114060LN and possibly a Tudor 94010 if I'm lucky. Truth-be-told however, if you were to ask me what my opinion was of Rolex 6 months ago I would have probably bashed the company.

Lets be honest, there are a lot of things not to like about Rolex. Sterile unchanging designs, lack of customer service, import controls, price, and we all know the reputation of owning a "Rolex" isn't always positive either. For a while I thought only guys who wore designer jeans with dress shoes, and women who wore polo shirts with the lapels flipped up, owned Rolexes.

But a few months back something changed in me. At the peak of my watch collecting obsession I became uncompromisingly peculiar about my watches; the finish, the lume quality, the proportions of the watch, the quality of the movement. The once beautiful Sinn 556 I owned disgusted me at night when the lume fired up and revealed unevenness and spotty application. I grew out of the Omega Speedmaster I once coveted and quickly found myself selling it on the forums. I became a perfectionist. And in my obsession for perfection something caught my eye. The class, versatility, robustness, and simplicity of the submariner suddenly caught my attention. And while not very many watches are perfect, the Rolex's straight-forward design has allowed few disagreements to spring forth in my mind. Suddenly, what was once "tacky" became the ultimate embodiment of perfection. Swiss precision with a hint of German minimalist design.

Although Rolex and Tudor has monopolized the space on my wrist, one's thing for sure however, I won't be caught dead wearing designer jeans with dress shoes!

Welcome to the club! Don't agree with the lack of customer service though, unless you're referring to dealing with Rolex HQ, but otherwise, it looks like you've seen the light! Enjoy!

I’m a bit the same although never hated Rolex just didn’t appeal to me (except the submariner – but I didn’t dive!!) I’m a big Seiko and vintage fan and have a stellar collection of NOS and collectables but not for everyday use. I then discovered a Rolex that ticked all the boxes and was great for everyday use. I now have just purchased my 5th in a year including 2 subs and I still don’t dive!!!
I love that people hate Rolex…all the reasons they hate them are the reasons I love them…and lets face it there are enough of us wearing them already….

I have never hated it. Only thing I found when I first started was that its design seems plain but after looking at many other watches from different manufacturers I realised its beauty lies in its 'plainness', a lack of ever growing new models and an attitude of not following design trends like the others is something I started appreciating Rolex even more for.

Rolexes are great but remember they are machine made, not handmade HH, and have flaws like most watches, for example the lume on my Subc is not as well applied as on my cheaper Breitling or as strong.

I got into Rolex because of the name but became a small collector because of the quality. I think we have all seen that article that divides the opinion of Rolex into three categories: 1. People who buy Rolex because of the name. 2. People who hate Rolex because of the name. 3. People who just think Rolex makes great quality watches. 99% of us on these forums fall into that last category or have at least evolved into that category (in my case). If I ever get anyone's ear who wants to talk watches but isn't a WIS, I always stress that Rolex really is low to mid upper tier brand that just produces a quality product.

There was a time when I didn't care much for Rolex owners and didn't know anything about Rolex.

Now, I know a lot about Rolex and I also know a lot of great people who own and wear Rolex watches.

A threshold, indeed.

Haha ahh yes PP. I actually don't have a taste for the high-brow look of most premier Swiss brands although I highly respect the historical influence and the mechanical complications of PP. I'm more into simplicity so my tastes lean a bit more North of Geneva, specifically Glashutte. Rolex in my opinion is perfect because it more or less embodies the German design philosophy of pure functionality but with Swiss precision and accuracy.

Please don't tell me you paired it with an Ed Hardy or Christian Audigier t-shirt.

I really wanted a breitling for a long time because they were sporty and stuff, but then once I started getting into movements and stuff Rolex really started taking over. Sure the breitling would get plenty of attention, but I feel that they become dated really quickly. (there are some exceptions). then I decided if I wanted a breitling I would get it after I got a rolex. After I decided I really wanted a rolex it took me about a month to get. and after I got it, I just want more rolexes.

A client of mine gave me a bottle of Ed Hardy champagne.

I wanted to bash him over the head with it.

Congrats on finally getting out of being "narrow-minded-ness".

Nothing is perfect, especially in the world of watch collecting. That's why there are so many designs and styles to choose from.

I guess you'd hate Porsche 6 moths ago then

No... a bottle of Ed Hardy champagne...big difference. I took it as an insult, I would rather have a flaming bag of poo than anything with Ed hardy on it.

It upset me even more being a lover of good wine.

Of course I didn't hit him with it...that would be
