I heartily recommend Isla Mujeres, Mexico as a destination.

My spouse has been to Isla Mujeres, Mexico several times, but I had not until this month. The island is a bit of a throwback to an older, less developed Mexico. There is only one high-end resort on the island, and it is far away from restaurants and neighborhoods, so we avoided it. We stayed on a tiny island at the north tip of Isla Mujeres and enjoyed it immensely. We never had less-than-spectacular food, and the weather was perfect.

Sculptures on the south tip:

I re-arranged some of my business insurances and pensions today, and the guy who did it had been to Playa del Carmen Mexico, as I mentioned I didn't want his cold, as I'm heading for holiday soon.

He had only great things to say about Mexico. Can't wait.

I lived for two summers on Cozumel back when I was a teenager, this was in 1976 and 77. It was a work-study program with school and I tought Scuba Diving to tourists. The first year I lived in the house of the dive-shop owner, some corner shack I couldn't tell you how to get to now. I shopped in the market, ate in the little roadside shacks, (learned the hard way about food poisening) and generally lived the laid-back life. I learned Spanish, met a lot of great people, dove the Palencar reef.... This was back when there was very little development on the island.... I remember they were buiding the "El Presidente" hotel the first summer, I spent the second living in it. Life there was.... Well, Joey pointed to it superbly in his OP. It was just... different....

Sometimes I wonder why I ever left...

Those are very nice pictures indeed! I'll have to keep this place in mind if I ever want to go down South on a trip.

I've also been informed that the red bird is not a parrot but instead a macaw. I'll post some downtown and neighborhood photos later today.

We stayed at the Avalon Reef Club. It consists of condos, villas and hotel rooms. We stayed in a room. It is a two-star hotel with a five-star view, as it sits on its own tiny island accessible by a rickety wooden bridge.

Rooms are very basic, with all-Spanish TV, AC, a very hard bed and few power outlets. However, they are perfectly adequate for someone who wants a more genuine Mexican experience. The condos and villas are very nice, but they remind me of any one of dozens I've seen across the Caribbean.

There is a very good restaurant at the resort for those days one doesn't want to walk a bit or for when it might rain.

If you are looking for a Four Seasons Hotel experience, don't stay here. If you want a decent place to sleep and shower while you explore the island and its people, I highly recommend it.
