SD 16600 date change problem

I have an M series SD 16600. I bought it new in October 2007.

Upon returning from a recent trip where I did not bring it, I needed to change the date. As most here will know, per the Rolex Oyster manual, it is the third action with the crown, i.e. before the time change. However, I cannot change the date - the crown goes from the winding position to the time change position. I have tried this numerous times, and used a reasonable amount of force. I have not tried too hard to pull, for obvious reasons.

The watch has been treated well and has not been dropped, etc. It is worn on alternate days in rotation with an IWC 371701.

I was planning on getting it serviced anyway and this issue has brought that forward.

Has anyone here had a similar issue?
If so, do you know if this can be fixed via a regular service or is it a more fundamental problem.

Any tips welcome to help an anxious SD owner

Mayby post your question in the watchtech section, sorry but I don't have the knowledge to answer your question but I bet someone there will. I would hope that it would be an easy fix during the service though.

Have you tried changing the date in the time set position by advancing past midnight and then trying again in the date set position?

+1

This might help shed more light on what might be going on.

I tried as you suggested. The date changes normally when in the time set position, without any difference in terms of speed, sound, etc.

When I then try to put the crown into date change position, it goes straight into the winding position without any clicks, resistance, etc. The same applies when I try to put the crown into date change position from the winding position.

Can you go to the third position ( time) and then go back to the second ( date) position?

My guess is you are at the time where you should not change the date, that is some where mid early am. Advance the watch to about 9am and see if that brings it back to normal.

This movement can safely change dates at ANY time.

There is a "notch" that your stem misses. Not serious, you can fix it during your service, its either the trigger in the watch that sets the "position" or the stem itself.

When you are trying to change the date make sure that the time was set well away from 12 o Clock as this can prevent it changing in the 3rd position

.. The FIRST position (after unscrewing) of the crown is winding.. The SECOND position is date setting, and the THIRD is setting the hands/time.

Sometimes it takes a little fiddling to get it in between

You cannot pull the crown out any further than the time change position..

It could be simply a lack of oil in the proper areas and the detents are not smoothly engaging, it is a few years old..

Thanks. I will bring it for a service and see what they say - hopefully it is just a simple matter of lack of oil or similar.

Mine takes a little fiddling to find the sweet spot, I find lightly pushing in and pulling out while rotating slightly finds the catch and flicks the date.

The 16600 (cal 3135) is equipped with a quickset movement. This means you can change the date anytime. The ETA movements has this date change limitation.

It looks like he tried all what he could do to change the date manually. Could be some stem issue.

Sounds like the set bridge is off track or broken will be taken care during a service. Rikki
