which wireless router do you use just brand name ? and how often do you replace them seems mine last like 4 -5 years and slow down inconsistent then finally stop working currently using the Cisco brand..have to get another one tomorrow kids are going thru computer withdrawal lol had to take out the cord to plug their laptops in from modem to finish their home work sign of the times i guess..

Linksys 3000 easy to set up just did it 20 minutes ago up and running. Seems to be working fine for me.

Regardless of the brand, I'd recommend getting a dual-band wireless / gigabit wired whether you have dual band or gigabit devices now or not. Be sure to download an app that shows you what channels and how strong surrounding wireless systems are. Pick an unused channel. Locate the router as centrally to your desired coverage area as possible and use a heat map app to insure you have proper coverage.

To answer your question, I use Netgear... but that is not as important as the above information.

The thing about your routers bogging and eventually dying is worth figuring out.

We run Linksys Gigabit and they only "break" when buffers overflow due to hack attempts. A quick reset is all they usually need.

But replacing every 4-5 years for any new features and better speeds can be worth it.

Belkin make fine routers. I have one for my entire system and stream multiple instances of Netflix to TV and tablets all while other computers are online downloading files and surfing the web.

Honestly, routers have become so standard in homes now that as long as you avoid the cheapest bargain brand/model, you should have no problems with any of them really.

Apple Airport is what I have been using for ten years now.

After about 6 or 7 years, I got bored with the first one and got an Extreme. Still running strong!

I seem to get 3-4 years out of a router before it conks out. So I'm not so concerned about how many years it will last as I am about that it works everytime and not require frequent re-booting. I had a linksys that needed to be re-booted a couple times a month. My last router was a Belkin which only needed to be re-upped once in a great while. I recently got an ASUS and so far so good. It is a little faster but was a bit pricier at about $130. No issue with either signal strength or coverage anywhere in the house.

Try updating the firmware. I used the heck out of a linksys wrtg54. I had to upgrade for wireless n. linksys e1200. Easy to setup with disk or manually at the setup page.
