Thoughts on this 5512 please.

Friend of mine popped round this morning and asked me if I was interested in the following.













Serial is 869XXX / 1560 movement / case back reads V.62

Would appreciate any comments.

A pointed crown guard, 5512, doesn't come around too often. It appears to wear the original bracelet and the dial looks very nice. It has had some case work in the past which includes some buffing /polishing which is normal for most vintage watches. It appears that the bottom right lug had the chamfer worked over a little aggressively as the chamfer has now been angled into the pin hole. The bezel insert appears to be a later, Rolex replacement insert but this would not be uncommon for a 50-year-old watch.

It could be a nice score if the price is right.

He's asking around GBP6K (USD9.5k), but he's no expert. I'm not sure if this is fair or not. Regardless, I'm more interested if the watch looks okay first. The pictures don't do it much justice and it was hard to get clear lit images without reflections in the dome.

I must admit, it looks stunning in the flesh.

I'll have to do some research, I've no idea what kind of price these are. I'm usually a 1655, 1665, 1675 & 1680 person.

55XX's aren't my forte, hence my post.

His case looks much sharper but the dials look identical.

Problem is the one on VRF is four times the price I'm being offered, which is a big problem. A morale problem.

It certainly seems like a good example for the price. However, only you can determine whether the over polishing and later bezel matter. Personally, whenever I look at a piece that has uneven lugs, I know I will be staring at them all the time wishing I had a fatter case. If you are not that person, I'd say go for it.

No expert but dial is very good imho. Case is nice as well. I don't think this is a GBP 6k watch. Make it a multiple I'm afraid.

I'm with Adam. I can live with polished lugs - par for the course with old watches - but uneven lugs really bug me. I have an old 5513 afflicted with 'skinny lug' (only one lug) and that flaw catches my eye every time I look at it.

All in all though, I watch the PCG prices and think circa US $9.5 sounds kinda fair for the watch you are considering. Some added value in that simple dot at 6:00pm too

very very underpriced....moral crisis indeed. watches with a dial that pretty could easily do 3-4x that retail.

great watch and value is all about the dial. pretend for a moment it had a service dial in ....without the dial its a £3k thing on ebay all day long ..... if it had a better stronger unpolished case its maybe a £4k thing.

arguing about the niggles of a case on a watch like that priced at £6k is like two fleas arguing which one of them owns the dog they live on.

If the dial is genuine it is very far below market price. Should be at least 15k gbp.

The dial looks almost too good though.

I'd want it checked out by an expert. All the money o these is in the dial, if a redone dial then it's around fair price.

OK. For the avoidance of doubt, let me be more clear. The dial is fake (not authentic). The hands are fake (not authentic). The bezel insert is a service insert which has been artificially aged and "roughed up" to make it look old. I would worry a lot less about which lug is uneven or which spring bar hole is a millimeter closer to the edge, and more about the fact that this whole watch is a lash-up, a fraud. And the price is the classic sucker price. Too high for what it really is, but cheap enough to make the greedy side of a collector plunge in headlong without investigating more thoroughly, or giving full airing to the nagging doubts at the back of his mind.
