Need computer help please..

I have a Dell. I cannot get online. Either at home or at work. My GF can get online at home with her computer. I cannot.

Brought my computer to work. My co workers can get online but I cannot. I have tried using an ether cord and wireless connections.

Any advice. Dell. Windows 7.

Thank you to anyone who come advice other than get an Apple.

Using my friend's computer now and only have a short window.

Laptop?

Make sure the power plug is in and working. Dell had driver that disabled laptop Ethernet port when not plugged in.

Control Panel > Network Connections > Show Adapters > make sure you see adapters listed (something like Broadcom 10/100/100 Ethernet LAN or something)

Control Panel > Network Connections > Show Adapters > go to properties of your network adapter > IPV4 Properties > make sure set to DHCP - if there is a static address assigned it will likely not work on other networks

You also may have a virus that had disabled / disrupted your IP stack. Go & download MalwareAntibytes (from MajorGeeks.com) onto a thumb drive, install onto laptop and run full scan, remove anything found - may or may not resolve this.

Thanks for the advice. The things you told me to look for I could not find on my control panel. Still SOL.

Bottom right corner of your desktop is an icon with a computer & a wire, might have a caution symbol, hover over until you see network (no access or something similar) Right click and "Open Network and Sharing center" > Change Adapter Settings

In the windows line, type CMD

In the DOS window that comes up. type: IPCONFIG /all

This will give you the status of the adaptors, and if the computer is receiving an IP address (assuming DHCP).

Then you can do a release and renew... Feel free to PM me and I can walk you through the steps.

If this is a laptop...on the very front of your computer is a fluted, sliding button near the touch pad. This switch blocks or opens internet access. You may have accidentally slid the button over while moving your computer. That's my guess.

Well I am back online. Thanks to all that offered help. I had to re-install so many things. Drivers etc. What a mess. My partner at work probably spent 10 hours on the thing at home fixing it.

Are you saying you cannot get online into this forum? If so I think I know why PM me and hopefully we can resolve this problem. I know because I had the same problem about 1 month ago.

Aloha,
Tom
