I'm sitting on a beach in the south of France today and I notice a couple in their 40's and the wife is sporting a YG Daytona and the Husband has a DSSD.

Anyway, an hour later I notice the Husband taking his watch off and handing it to his wife before going for a dip in the sea. I couldn't believe it, he actually took it off to go for a swim.

The only thing I can think of is that he didn't want to risk scratching it (god forbid it got wet). I popped in a few hours later with my 100m Daytona, no hesitation at all...

You would think that 3900m is enough for some but apparently not for this fellow

Ha. This has me recall one day when an associates wife made him take off his **Movado** and hand it to her before climbing into 'my fishing boat'...

I can think of a few good reasons not to go swimming with a DSSD.

1. He might be one of those folks who are afraid of losing or scratching their timepieces, as you mentioned.

2. He was afraid that the sheer weight of the watch might drag him inexorably to the bottom of the ocean.

3. It wasn't an actual DSSD.

thing that doesn't make sense to me is he handed it to his wife! Mine would have just set it down on the sand and called it a day!

Easy to think the worst about the situation. I'm going to guess it's real because I'm sure you would of seen if it wasn't.

On the other hand, the purchase of a Rolex is not an obligation to do anything with it. You can't get angry at a guy for not using his watch the way you would.

Maybe it has a lot of sentimental value to him and he doesn't want to risk it?
Maybe he forgot to get it pressure tested and he doesn't want to risk it?
He may be simply uncomfortable swimming with a watch.

There are many reasons other than just being scared of scratching. I see no point in slating a man when you know nothing about him or the situation. I didn't buy my sub so people could bitch about how I use it. If I don't want to wash my hands with my watch then that's my choice.

It's excellent but unfortunately also very expensive if eating out. We have a flat down here so we normally buy from the local shops and do it ourselves which works out much better, my cooking skills need a bit of work though

Definitely a DSSD but I couldn't tell if it was fake or not, there are some pretty good renditions of that one. It looked pretty good to me and it's extremely hard to fake a YG Daytona so I assume they were both real.

The sand on the beach can do more harm to his sentimental piece than the sea, the watch can't be more than 5 years old as it was released in 2008 so no pressure check should be required, and I'll yield to the comment about comfort but you really need to lighten up. This was a friendly story made to inspire jest and conversation.

No insult was implied, I just found it a strange story that I figured others would enjoy. Personally, wearing my SubC actually INSPIRES me to get it wet and I found myself wishing I had taken it instead. If you're offended by this because you don't like to get yours wet while washing your hands, please accept my confused apologies.

I feel kind of sorry for that poor guy. I bought a nice Fat Lady that I won't go swimming with until I know it checks out for water resistance...

I do find it funny. After all, the word "sea" appears twice in the full name of the watch, and this guy doesn't want to take it into the sea.

It's like carrying an expensive ceramic kitchen knife around the house all day, and then putting it away as soon as you enter the kitchen, for fear that it might strike a vegetable.

But I should remind myself that everyone has their peculiar little idiosyncrasies, as do I. Maybe he knew he wouldn't have a chance to rinse the salt water off of the watch for a while. Who knows?

Once the deepsea is in her purse it's as good as gone. He has a better chance to recover his deepsea at the bottom of the ocean.
