The Perfect small collection

I keep changing my mind as to what to do with my watch collection, and my current thinking is to rationalise what I have and re-invest in a smaller but perfectly formed collection to see me through life!

Thoughts are as follows:

1. PP Aquanut/Nautilus: Smart watch for formal and work wear
2. Sea Dweller 16600: All purpose everyday wear
3. Black Bay or SeaMaster: Tough Wear (when damaging the £5k SD would hurt)
4. G-Shock: Extreme wear
5. Birth Year 5513: Just because...

Total collection between £20k - £25k

A Daytona is a possible alternative to the Patek, but I'd really like a Patek in my collection. There are smarter Pateks than the Aquanut and the Nautilus, but a smart sports watch suits me very well as a person.

Any thoughts on the a above? Aquanaut vs Nautilus vs Daytona? SeaMaster 300M vs Black Bay? Better collection for £20k - £25k?

It's all totally personal. I don't think you need a black bay, if you have a 5513. So, the vintage sub, the SD a g-shock and a PP dress watch would cover everything.

114060 casual
5167 casual
5711 dressy
DJII smooth bezel dressy
JLC reverso formal

you don't need a black bay or sea master beater. If I wanted a small collection then my beater watch would be a £150 Seiko automatic or something like that.

5 is the smallest I could get my collection to. I need a casual watch and a dressy watch all the time so need two of each for when the other is being serviced. I also need a formal watch and when that's being serviced I could stick a leather strap on my DJII.

There is no perfect small collection as they are only perfect to that specific owner. Watch collecting is all subjective and changes with each person!

IMO there's no such thing as the"perfect collection". Your tastes will change as will your watches.

The perfect collection to me is one that your content with based on your different styles. For instance not all my pieces are expensive, I have a sinn 103 a sa, breitling superocean, marathon gsar, and a Hamilton x-wind. I owned an 80's datejust but sold it off a while back. Now on the hunt for two pieces. The pieces I choose next will be for dressy or casual dress (rolex), and the omega planet ocean chronograph will be for everyday luxury piece.

I'd drop the Sea Dweller and the Black Bay/Seamaster since you have the 5513- the birth year wins every single time.

For me, this is my plan for my ideal collection:

I want 2 watches- the everyday watch and when you get bored, you've got a flash, weekend holy grail to keep things exciting. As a civilian with wis-like tendencies (compared to a full blown wis) this works for me- anything in between the everyday and the holy grail isn't worth it. I'd rather have a Platinum DD or a YG Daytona than a collection of SS watches. I've already got the everyday watch down- the 214270- it just has a classic design that will never go out of style. Now I've got to work on the grail... it will be several years, but it will be worth it.

That would be a fine collection, you could get by without the black bay/seamaster,
of course, it doesn't provide any additional functionality, it's just where you draw
the line on potential abuse/damage between the SD and gshock. Between the
BB and seamaster, I'd probably go with the seamaster. Different styling than
the BB, which is already covered by the 5513.

You might consider the PP calatrava for #1. Lovely formal/work watch.

Also, think about metal bracelet vs. leather. Except for the rubber Gshock I
think you're all metal bracelets. Natos are always a possiblity.
You say you're a sporty guy, so maybe leather isn't of interest.

Regards,

Jack D.

If you're looking for a collection for the rest of your life I think you need to stick with iconic watches of each brand. That way they will always look good and never outdated. My collection would be:

1. Submariner (which ever model you like)
2. Speedmaster
3. JLC Reverso
4. Which ever Casio as a beater

I agree with this as my tastes have already changed. What's perfect today may seem completely off a few years from now.

Yeah... I think everyone's perfect small collection will be different, with the chance of it changing over time.

For me:
1. AP15400
2. PP Nautilus
3. Rolex Sub/SD

At this point in my life, I don't see myself wearing leather straps, and the three above are suitable for all occasions.

Yeah, an AP ROO or ROC rather than a Daytona as your sports prestige watch.

And rather than ss on the classic but simple Nautilus how about in YG or RG on strap, got my eye on one, and the price for preowned is very similar and its far more dressy and luxurious as your special occasion watch.

And then one ss Rolex for everday like your SD.

Patek over Daytona, Seamaster over Black Bay (only cause Tudor is similar already to your Rolex). My ideal collection is:
1. JLC Reverso - dress
2. Explorer I - everyday
3. GMT II - GMT function
4. Speedmaster - chronograph
5. Birth year 5513 - vintage

So far I've got 3 out of 5, however I already have a vintage seamaster but I'm still gonna go for that 5513.
