Newbie
Hi guys, just signed in and glad to participate. I live in Peru and just inherited a gold/steel fluted bezel oyster bracelet 1997 date Rolex. Previously had a steel Submariner that got stolen. I have always loved Rolex watches and this one is no exception. It really looks great.
Can you guys help with a couple of answers? The watch has the word " DATE " on the dial. Is there such a model? Shouldn't it be " DATEJUST "? Also, when I wind it there seems to be two stages: At first there is certain resistance in the crown and after some turns it diminishes. Is that normal? Is there a mechanism that does that to avoid overwinding the watch? Is it safe to get it serviced out of RSC? This watch looks like new. Lastly, what is the value of this watch? I'm attaching a picture of it. Best regards, |

Welcome to TRF, Don't worry about the watch only having Date on the dial it is a Oyster Perpetual Date the case should be 34mm wide the 'DateJust' is 36mm wide. I really like the gold block/Roman marker dial with the gold coronet under the 12. There should be no problem with an RSC service as long as the watch is all original genuine Rolex. As to Value here in the UK you would be able to pick up a watch like yours in excellent condition for around £1600 GBP a little more with box and papers etc... Enjoy |

First of all,welcome to TRF!
You have wonderful watch out there. Why Date and not Datejust?Because they`re two different models.Your is Oyster Perpetual Date, with it`s size of 34 mm,while Datejust is slightly bigger,36 mm. Basicaly, that`s the main difference between these models. Value of your watch?According to www.swissluxury.com,price of new OP Date in yellow gold/steel is 6200$,but they give some discount,so you can have it for 5300$.And used one goes for 2500 - 3000$. And there are much more important things that can define the value of your watch, like it`s overall condition,box,papers... Anyway, like I said before, you have a wonderful watch! |

Welcome to TRF. Jo Amo Lima! Have been in Lima twice, and really enjoy the park near the big church in Miraflores..on sunday they have fantastic art sales, and knick-knacks available. Have travelled around La Molina(also great), and some other areas a little 'rough' like Comas(woah, more like Mad Max film) and Los Olivos. Once was up to Cusco. You have a great country and that's a very nice Rolex. Welcome to TRF!
best, dan |

Thanks, more information! Date vs. Datejust. Never heard of a 'Date'. Do they still make a 'Date'? How old would his watch be? best, dan |

Hi there, welcome aboard!
Re overwinding your watch, all automatic watches have a built in protection device. The outer end of the mainspring is not attached to the barrel, but rides in indents in it. This allows the barrel to "slip" around the spring once it's fully wound.
