Ever have those thoughts about a Rolex, you've sold or pawned a few days or years back and wish you still had it. I sold my 1972 Rolex 1680 Red Submariner 3.4mil years back to a local dealer, as i realized he gave me an unfair price for it since it was really used and now it's actually worth more since it's vintage. I've owned the watch for about 7 years and it was my everyday run around and activity watch. All those memories just lost, met my wife with that watch, first question she asked me when we met was "hey, nice watch what kind is it" and that is what reeled her in.

That's a sad story, indeed! I've only traded one Rolex, a 1967 Rootbeer. It was the only watch with gold in my collection. Haven't given it another thought!

I can imagine that it must sting, considering what you know now.

On the other hand, the memories remain (and the wife also hopefully) whether you still own the watch or not

No need to look back on things you can not change anymore, but embrace the present and enjoy it to the max!

Sad story K. The only ones that I've ever flipped I didn't regret. They didn't sing to me and I really had no history with them so Bye Bye. The ones that I have now are here for the duration and will be passed to future generations.

There are a few that I regret selling because of market fluctuation. I would have liked to make more $ to buy more watches.

Have made a mistake or two like that, the more significant being when I traded an SD against a 1680. Both excellent watches but always regretted not holding on to it! Kinda made up for it slightly with a number of further Rolexes though, and when a nice SD shows up, I will go for it as a straight buy!

Yes I made that mistake once with a Pepsi GMT, wish I'd just put it away for a few years until the love returned.

However it's a lesson learned, now I'll only ever buy quality pieces that will be keepers and hide them if ever dark thoughts of flipping creep in.

Stories like that are exactly why my first Rolex which I only bought a year ago, a P serial 16610 which by the way will have a few loving touches done to it on Nov. 5th in Tampa with Rikki will be my never ever get rid of watch.

Yeah, my first Rolex was a Sub I bought from a friend of a friend for $175 around 1974.

I think I got $900 for it so I thought I was a real hot shot...

Kind of. I flipped a 5513 for my 14060 about 13 years ago. I love my 14060 and will never part with it, so I can't say that I actually regret it...but damn, I'd love that have that 5513 back again.

I hear ya.Years ago, I sold a 50's vintage Air King Explorer dial to fund a different watch, a Tag maybe

that was in the mid 90's.Still regret it, as I can't find one.

I haven't ever sold a Rolex, but I have traded 2 for other Rolex watches. Interestingly, both that were traded were 16600 SDs. I love a SD and still have 2 plus a DSSD. I also love the two Rolex watches that I got in trade. However, I will try to NEVER let another Rolex go for any reason unless it goes to one of my kids or my wife.

Sold a 16750 which I miss and a 16200 DJ, which I "kinda miss" (not a big DJ fan). Both have gone up a lot in price recently, since I sold them in 2007 (during the recession).

16750 GMT and 18038 President I regret selling. Sold the president to purchase a house (which I later took a $20K bath on).

I am trying to take a more measured approach to collecting. Growing the collection slowly, so I don't use all my spare cash for collecting (thereby increasing the chances I need to sell one).

Got a SS Daytona at MSRP in 1996. Sat in safe. Flipped it for enough to get a mint 14060 with the profit. Daily wearer. Free is good. No regrets even though the Daytona will likely go up and up.

the only watch I regret selling was my first ever Rolex...was a DJ from '79...I had it serviced and sold it for triple what I paid for it but I still miss it :/
