GMT Master II - Red Needle
Hi there,
Could anyone tell whether GMT Master II - red needle (16710), either red black bezel, red blue or black is available in US? If yes, how much and any discount? Thanks a lot in advance. |

Tks Dan. I misquoted the ref.
how much discount it is usually offered for a watch like 16710 in the States? I'm far away in Hong Kong and haven't been to the States for four years. |

Welcome to TRF!
There still are GMT II 16710's out there, but better be quick since they are not made anymore. As for discount?? Depends on the AD and your negotiations skills, but I'd say you should be able to get around 10 to 15 %. Best of luck!

I ordered and picked up a 16710 this year. It came with a GMT IIc manual, by the way.
Find an AD who will ship the box back to you - then you can avoid sales tax (roughly 7% depending on the state you buy it in). You should also be able to get a 15% discount on a watch like that. |

They can still be had. Pricing will vary depending on the AD's policies.

I saw a couple of each the other day. They even had the two dials (ll and II).

They seem to be sold out from the Danish AD's, I am afraid, but there might be other European AD's who have NOS (New Old Stock) GMT II 16710's.

I almost forgot the sales tax issue as it is not required in HK. Is the price quoted as retail price with sales tax inclusive, or I need to pay 7% of the sales tax? Maybe I can claim tax refund as a tourist. |

When and which part of the US are you visiting? If you're going to be in the NYC area, I can suggest a dealer that I believe has a red/blue and red/black 16710 in stock.
MSRP on the 16710 is $5075 and then take about 10-15% off for discount and then add 7% for sales tax. (depending on what state, the tax will change - my suggestion is 7% tax) Not sure if you can get the 7% sales tax back as tourist. I know you can do that in Europe, but not sure if you can do that in the US. |

I've noticed the 16710 availability is drying up.. Some Grey Dealers are not even offering it anymore as their source suppliers do not need to "dump" any excess stock.
If you do find some AD's with this model in stock, I'm not so sure you are going to see a lot of discounting.. There are plenty of people willing to pay MSRP since this is their last chance to get this discontinued model new.. Of course, it all depends on the policy of the AD you're shopping at..

My AD has a Pepsi left and I believe a Coke as well. PM me if you would like the contact info. They're in Oregon so you won't pay sales tax and I'm sure you could get some sort of discount as I think he's looking to move it quick.

There was no coke, pepsi or black GMT II in HK anymore for the following reasons: (i) the Mainland Chinese come to HK and buy a lot of luxurious goods including of course Rolexes. Not only GMT, there are few sub and exp ii's in the market. (ii) The previous stock should have dried up and even at the retail price without discount (in HK, AD usually offers 5% to 10% for sports models), it's hard to find a brand-new piece. Fyi, even for the green needle, i.e. GMT IIc, the stock is also short and the market price was once 14% higher than the retail price. Our market is different. In the past, the Japanese came to buy and now the Mainland Chinese come to consume. After all, goods are cheaper in HK as the HK$ (pegged to US$) has depreciated a lot and there is still no sales tax even though the government really wanna widen the tax base. Having said that, GMT ii was not a popular sports model in HK. It is only the birth of GMT IIc to have brought some edge to this model. |

With current exchange rates, you may be able to do well here in the US. Shipping internationally could be an issue, dependant on the AD. Unless things have gone up, the $5075 list price is correct. Discounts are also available, again, dependant on AD. You may want to check in w/Downing (IIRC) and see if Portland, OR has any in stock. I know deals have been negotiated before but I don't want to speak for others or their willingness to help out. The other thing to be aware of are trade agreements. I know I can order from HK duty free because of existing trade agreements. Local state sales tax would be irrelevant regardless of what state you buy from. Good luck!!
