Extreme conditions for your Rolex

Who had their Rolex go thru an extreme condition?

One winter, Mine was ripped off my wrist by a thief in my back yard. Ran into the house to call police and knew then that I had lost my watch. In spring, two months later, when I drained the swimming pool, what did I find at the bottom? My Explorer II ! Seems the crook had gotten rid of it in case he got caught. It wasn't running but no water had gotten into it. Washed it off, set the date and time, shook it, and it started running fine again. Had to service it though for the broken wrist band.

Wow! That was quite an ordeal your Rolex went through!

The worst that has happened to a Rolex I once owned (an SS Sub Date) was when I was involved in a traffic accident. A left-turning car, giving no signals, hit me as I was riding my bicycle. I flew over the roof of the car and hit the asfalt, knocking the crystal of my Sub Date right onto the asfalt. The crystal and bezel needed exchanging, and the whole watch was completely overhauled since the bracelet and case also got badly scratched.

Whew! Two scary stories but both with good endings. Bo, I experienced the same thing but on my first motorcycle. The little old lady told the police she never saw me. I was only 18 and was wearing a Gruen that was totally destroyed. Any permanent damage to you?

Nothing serious. Just broke my left collar bone in two places.

Bo, I've only broken one bone in my body (but twice, on two different occasions), and that happens to be MY LEFT COLLARBONE!

I've beaten the hell out of mine at work, on the range, the gym, on the mat, wiped out on my motorcycle once, hiked, surfed, water skied and one has never let me down yet. Lots of scratches (character) but never quit on me

I once crashed in a cycle road race when wearing my GMT. I sort of landed on my GMT but somehow it didn't get dragged along the tarmac or mangled and it wasn't damaged as much as I was! That was in 1970, when my watch was three years old. Since then it has been accidentally dropped onto concrete (twice), hit with a hammer (once) and chewed by the pet dog! Five mishaps in forty years isn't bad, considering it's worn daily and goes everywhere with me.

Living in Canada can sometimes be cold in winter months. Was wondering what type of extreme cold weather, above or below water, some of your sub dates have endured ? Right now in Toronto its about -25 with the wind chill. I had my TT sub out with the snow blower the other night, sure it was under a gloved hand but I was still thinking how 'she' might feel the cold. I know kinda weird to say 'she' but this watch is soooooo cool !

Ooh...that Xray brings back some memories! If I were wearing my Rolex when I spilled off the motorbike last year it would definitely been an "Extreme Story". I landed palms out and my left side took it all...ouch!

Great Stories! Rolex would benefit from them. Companies use things they pick up from formus and blogs. I´m going to take some aspirin after seeing that xray!

Great story Rod. I bought an ExpII and have wondered if it is gonna hodl up to regular swimming. I guess your story provides the answer. Now if we can put the thief in the bottom of the pool for awhile. See if he's as tough.

I was around 20 years old and had a TT DJ with a Jubilee bracelet. Got thrown from a horse and landed on my left hand and my nose. My left hand hit the ground so hard that the brecelet clasp "uncurled" where it wrapped around a pin and the watch landed in the dirt.

Two days in the hospital for plastic surgery to set the broken nose (and dig the dirt out of the wound) later, I took a needle nose pliers and fixed the bracelet and wore the watch for another decade at least. It never missed a beat - but I still have marks on my hand from where the dirt was driven into the skin.

I was wearing my Tag Heuer Kirium Chronometer when I had my infamous bicycle accident. Broke my body on the asphalt but the Tag wasn't even scratched. It pays to own fine watches.

If i ever end up in a Viet cong prison camp I'd put my Rolex upp where the sun don't shine like the watch from Pulp Fiction. Now that's extreme conditions for a Rolex. Seven years up the brown tube. Guess I'd wish I'd wore a ladies DateJust instead of a Submariner though...
