Eaton's 1/4 Century Club FS
I love Rolexes, and I've decided I'd rather have a sports model than a dress model, so I'm offering this excellent 1953 Eaton's 1/4 Century Club wristwatch for sale. Most will be familiar with the Eaton's watches as being some of the very rare Rolexes that were made for a commercial customer but bear no outward Rolex branding. (Eaton's was a prestigious Canadian retailer that presented its employees with Rolexes commemorating 25 years of service).
I acquired the watch last year from the estate of the widow of the original owner. It's in original "as found" condition save for the new acrylic crystal replaced by my watchmaker. The piece has the unique Eaton's dial configuration: no Rolex branding and the classic Eaton's script log with "Swiss" below the 6. Of course the indices are applied gold spelling out "1/4 Century Club" around the beautifully aged original dial. The case is a ref. 6022 in 14K solid gold, so marked inside the caseback, with the reference number and serial numbers between the lugs as usual. The caseback is inscribed with the name of the employee and his dates of service, 1928-1953. The movement is a hand-wound 17 jewel Rolex that winds smoothly and runs well, but is in need of service. The advanced collector who invests in this watch will have his or her own preferred watchmaker so I've left that to the purchaser. The strap is a good-quality brown leather item that happens to have an "E" discreetly inscribed on the gold-tone buckle, and suits the watch well. The watch is in excellent condition for its age; the dial has a nice patina and only a few scratches which do not detract, and the case has a wonderful lustre that only a solid gold Rolex can produce. My scans certainly don't do it justice: I'm asking $2,500 or near offers for a watch of this quality and rarity. I might be interested in a trade plus cash for a Submariner. Please feel free to PM with any questions. Regards, d. |
