Lume Dots Problem
Greeting All,
This might not be a pleasant thread. Picked up my watch new at Seoul Duty Free Shop (South Korea) about one month ago. Recently have a closed look and found all the lume dots are not with even top surface, some of them even collapsed in the middle of it. Under strong light, slightly grey colour can be spotted in the middle of these dots, which seems to be the lume material was spread thin in the middle of these dots. Thus the colour of dial can been seen through lume dots! I see it certainly defects in lume dots quality. Is this normal for modern Rolex? Contacted Seoul Duty Free Shop and they refused to handling this case. The shop assistant even questioned me: why don't I check it at the first place. Would RSC Rolex Guarantee be able to cover these dots? need your expert advise. Thanks. check the pics: |

Its not normal but lume is just paint and sometimes paint does shrink in the drying process. And when you produce as many dials that Rolex does each month/year then yes might have a few not to the high normal standard. If the dial has defects then yes it should be changed under the warranty take it back and be firm that you are not happy with your watch. They can either change watch for you, or offer dial be changed under the warranty but that could take a few weeks to do.

thanks Pad. Since I live in a country different from the original purchasing country, the local RSC is the only place I can turn to. Would the local RSC be able to proceed "exchange for a new watch"? This is one month old watch, not so happy to have it fixed after such a short period. |

I think most of us would be fairly unhappy with that finish so definitely take it back...... Just looks sloppy and also quite noticeable so I can't imagine you would have a problem with RSC.

Is RSC able to replace a new watch with my GMT, which was purchased in another country?

I doubt you'll get a new watch out if it. Worse case scenario would most likely be you go to your closest AD have them send it to RSC (possibly making you pay for postage since it was not purchased at your local AD) for warranty work. Most likely I assume they will just change out the dial and send it back.

You can do an exchange under warranty in any RSC. It does not have to be the same country where it was purchased. I bought mine in Los Angeles, did an exchange in Jakarta. My GMT's dial had a different problem, where the markings are not properly aligned.

Just throwing in my support also on this one. Some level of imperfection might be expected on a watch, but looking at the photos, I agree, the Lume on your dial has quite a lot of imperfection...I would want that resolved also. As has been said, RSC will look after you. Good luck and I hope you either get a replacement, or the dial swap doesn't take too long!

I had a sub with a similar problem, perhaps a bit worse...on mine you could actually see a few pinholes of the black dial coming through...the replacement dial was improved and resembled yours.
ive since sold the watch because the case was also grossly defective (monday morning assembly line problem, i suppose) ill likely not buy a new rolex again since that experience combined with the extraordinarily poor customer service experience. RSC did replace the dial, but it is without a doubt a case by case basis. The problem has become more prominent since going to Maxi dials, and as Padi says, its just paint & the process of drying can be somewhat unpredictable.

I won't accept that but you will get a new dial and not a new watch from your local RSC.

shame and not acceptable as to me buying a new watch and being told we will put a new dial on it. yes that is an easy and acceptable fix covered under warranty BUT if I buy a new watch I dont expect it to have to be sent in and opened
anytime I have ever had an issue even as small as a minor scratch on a new watch my AD ALWAYS exchanged it for another watch and didnt even have the nerve to day "gee we will send it in they will pull your NEW watch apart and fix it and it will be good as new" yeah not for me my money in an AD with a new watch I am sure others will Blah Blah Blah about no big deal but it would be a BIG DEAL to me just my opinion on having bought many watches from the AD, and why I do |

If it were my watch, I would be looking for satisfaction thru RSC (in the country/location of your choosing). You are not being picky/unreasonable.

Try to get an exchange or refund at the original ad you bought the watch from, you should have inspected the watch before purchase. Sending a brand new watch to have it opened and messed with would make me even more angry, paying that kind of money for a brand new watch i expect close to perfection and not having to worry about fixing/servicing for the next 5 or so years.
