Trying to decide, GMT IIc vs. Omega SMP
Not having buyers remorse but I am trying to decide if I should keep the GMT IIc I got on Monday, return it, keep my Omega SMP or sell my Omega?
I bought the Omega SMP 2254.50 with a black dial a while back because I wanted a SS sport watch w/black dial for a daily wearer and thought "Why spend $5-6k on a beater?" The SMP was the perfect choice and it as a great watch. I wasn't looking to get another SS watch when David and I had lunch with our AD until he told me he had the GV Milgauss and who wouldn't buy one for MSRP? When that didn't happen and he offered me the GMT IIc, I really liked the look plus he offered me a little discount so I bought it. My buddy stopped over last night and he was looking at my collection and made the same observation. I know one is a diver, the other a gmt but they are both sport, ss, black dialed watches and serve the same purpose for me. So...I don't need to keep both and my needs are for a daily ss watch. It's not all about the money but let's face it, there is $4500 difference between them. If I keep the GMT IIc it also means I am not going to be purchasing a SS Daytona in the near future which isn't the end of the world as I love the TT Daytona I bought recently. I can afford to keep the GMT without any financial hardship but it means I am done purchasing anything else for a while. So, petty as it is in the scheme of the world, this is my problem. I know, my life sucks having to make these tough decisions. Any input or thoughts would be appreciated. For those that don't know what the Omega looks like, here it is.

Hi David,
If you travel frequently or keep track of another time zone, then keep the GMT IIc. The Omega SMP is a great overall watch and very tough, so is the GMT IIc, but I the depth rating (if you are going to go deep diving), the Omega SMP will be a better watch for that purpose. Since you are having some buyers remorse, take some time before you finally decide. Later on if you don't think it through, you'll have sellers remorse 6K for a beater watch is indeed quite pricey, but with Rolex, drop it off at an RSC and it will be like new again I would keep both if I had no financial commitments though. Best, Vernon

Quite frankly, I don't get the notion that a $5K-$6K watch can't be a daily wearer watch. Why not? As long as you're not doing something that can potentially damage the watch, why can't you wear the GMT-IIc everyday? Watches should be worn. Scratches and all simply add character to the watch and make the watch uniquely yours. |

As for wearing a 6K watch every day, why the heck not? Rolex makes a tough, durable watch and they make them to be worn. Just my |

Hi David.
If I were YOU, I would either keep them both or dump the SMP, over returning the GMT. If you insure your Rollies, you don't have to worry about loss/damage very much, and you will have a Rolex on your wrist every day you want to! If you REALLY think you won't wear it, then return it before you take off the stickers and lose some value on it. OR, I'll trade you for my Exp2, straight up! :

Are the terms "beater" and "everyday" watch interchangeable? When my SS was my only watch, I wore it every day, for everything for 10 years. Then I got my TT Sub. I wore it the same way for 8 years. They got some nicks and scratches. I sent them back for service last month. They came back looking brand new. So you can have your cake and eat it, too. Or are you saying an Omega is a much less expensive, so it can be a "beater" and you don't care about banging it around?

Well, they are all different watches. Who cares if you have two black face watches?!?! I don't. I have a 16610 and I would consider the Omega SMP (black face) that you have. They are different watches and both awesome.
About wearing a Rolex daily... Do it. You will scratch it, bump it, maybe even break it. Send it back to Rolex and 500-1000 later you have a brand new watch. That is what I really like about Rolex (and Omega). My advice. Don't do anything for at least two weeks. Let it sink in. I wouldn't wear the GMT IIc to preserve the value (well, maybe around the house a bit ). After two weeks or a month, think about it again. If at that time you are still thinking about getting rid of one, you probable should. PS - If you are getting rid of the SMP, PM me. No promises as I just bought a 16610, but you never know, I also might have another watch by then....

I would bite hard. I would not sell either, especially not the Rolex. Forget the Daytona for now. You have not bought enough watches to get on the list meaningfully anyway. With the price increase coming, I think you would be illadvised to sell the GMT. If you have to sell the Omega, do so. But I think you will really regret letting go of the Rolex.

Besides David, if you keep the GMT, you know you'll likely "get the call" one of these days from our AD when "your" Daytona comes in. Then you'll have equity with the GMT if you decide to trade/flip it for the Daytona

David, I'd wait a little while before deciding. See how you feel in a month. Pay attention to your instincts....what watch do you WANT to grab to put on each day?
I hear ya, as I'm wondering if I really need TWO datejusts, but that's another discussion! I like your Omega and I also like the new GMT-II ceramic, but it's what YOU like that matters. I think most of us respect the Omega brand and are obviously a bit more obsessed with Rolex (or else we wouldn't be here).....while most are saying KEEP the GMT, maybe you did buy it a little impulsively. It's the latest and greatest and it's hot. But maybe you're happier with your Omega. Point being, take your time thinking it over. Whatever you decide will be the right choice for you! |

I don't think he will get "the call" until he has bought 3 or 4 Rollers. That seems to be the general rule, although there are some exceptions.

Yeah, I'll have to get back to you on that, bud! Ahh NO! Hey how about a counter offer, you could throw in your Bluessy too! That would be fair, two used for one new! I haven't even taken the plastic off it yet..Huh, huh!! Seriously, They are all insured. I just need to decide what to do with my collecting watches as a whole. I am at 15 and I think I need to pare down a few. My problem is I like them all and you can only wear one at a time. I keep finding other new watches I want and SOMEONE NEEDS TO STOP THIS MADNESS!!!! Ok..Wheh, I needed a moment!

The cost of your "beater" is irrelevant.
It's the watch you choose to wear day-in and day-out.. I have plenty of watches that cost less than my TT Sub, it just happens to be the one I choose to wear every day; therefore, it is my beater..

I should clarify something. It's not the $$$$ of having the GMT as a daily watch. I wore my TT Sub as a daily watch for 15 years. But, that was when I wore one watch and didn't have a collection.
I have LOTS of $$$$ tied up in watches so now I have to decide how I am going to allocate these dollars. What I am saying is if I decide to keep the GMT, I am at about the dollar limit I am willing to have in watches. If I want to add any, I need to subtract from the herd. If I keep the Omega, I could buy 2-3 less expensive watches to play with for the same money? It would be nice though to have a daily watch be a Rolex again. Huhh, Heavy sigh. Does this all make sense?

Money is clearly not the isssue. If you wear it every dat then yes it is a daily beater. Mt Exp II is, that why I bought it.
Just keep the one that smile at ya

I hope to have and stay at 4 watches. It'll be intereting though because I have 2 right now, with plans to buy a less expensive Tissot in May and then hopefully one more Rolex at the end of the year. I suspect I'll stay like that until I give my kid(s) one or two of the 4 watches. Then I'll probably buy two more, but that's almost 20 years down the road. |

If you think of your watches as collector's items that need to be maintained in pristine condition, it may be a good idea to keep the Omega to "beat" on. Personally, I think it's a little bit tragic to leave an expensive steel sports watch mounted on a winder, and wear a cheaper one for fear of damaging the nice one.
Some people may think you protect this investment by keeping it safely tucked away. I think you get your money's worth by wearing the thing, so I don't put much stock in the idea of having a "beater" watch, unless you really do something that's exceptionally likely to harm the watch. I also think, if you already have a Daytona, you're better off with a GMT than another one, and 2 or 3 less expensive watches all have to get serviced sometime. |

I for my part would keep the Omega and sell the GMT IIc since:
1) you would lose too much money on selling the Omega. Omegas are great watches, but their resale value is less than great 2) The Omega SMP as you know it now will probably be discontinued and/or upgraded to a co-axial version. If you regret having flipped the SMP, you either cannot get the exact model you had again, or you have to pay a lot more for the co-axial version. 3) You can sell the GMT IIc for almost what you gave for it. And if you regret having sold it, you can easily get a new. 4) and this is subjective: IMHO, the SMP is much better value for the money than the GMT IIc.

You can always return the GMT but if you buy it again you'll hit the price increase that could well be more than what you will loose selling the SmP.
In your position I would return the GMT and only buy when I am sure of what I want. How much do you like that GMT?

I will believe it when I see it. How long is your AD's list? ANd you are on the top with 2 Rollers? I hope you are that lucky and wish you well, but have seen AD's operate otherwise. They get 2 a year, and reserve them for long time best customers. If you can get up top it the list, great for you.

Feel your pain and agree w/ Karis.....wait it out a while. Went through the same myself......was considering flipping my Super Avenger to get the GMT Pepsi......decided instead to order the Rubber Strap today to change it up a bit! Good luck w/ your decision!

That is a difficult decision. At best you may get $1500 for the SMP, so I don't think it makes that much difference in the total amount of dollars allocated to your collection. From that aspect, you would be better off flipping the GMT IIc. There are some areas of the country where the GMT IIc is rare, so that will increase your sales potential.
I guess if it was me...I'd keep them both

David, I have never bought a car, watch, boat, house, suit, golf clubs, fishing tackle, or anything else without having second thoughts or "buyer's regret". Sit on it a couple of more days and the right answer will come.
