Now that the NEW Sea Dweller is coming out...

Do you think the 16600 will become:

More popular?

Less popular?

Stay the same?

Amongst the WIS population, likely more popular. I also noticed Hoodinkee still hasn't covered it. I guess they are too enamored with the BLRO and updated BB.

Stay the same. The 16600 and 116600 will attract different buyers, I think.

To start with more popular because of the Price of the new sd.

Today an nos 14060m cost about 5350 euro and an nos 114060 cost 4990 euro (grey market). But maybe that is because there is many who prefere the looks of the 14060 better because of the smaller lugs.

The new sd 4000 has smaller lugs and therefore an look closer to the 16600 so will be interesting to see how that will impact the Price on the 16600...

My guess is that the Price on the 16600 will increase more now than before basel 2014.

I'm with Armyguy, I think more popular and values will likely rise quite significantly; just a hunch.

This watch is vastly different in every way except heritage design language. The puritans will still proclaim their undying loyalty to the SD while a new age of adoration will emerge with many having both.
I am very fond of the SD but without a maxi dial, no sport Rolex will ride my wrist.

In my case, I don't care what happens to the SD, I just want the SD4C on my wrist asap.

Like the older Daytonas they will increase in time after a period of flat results.

I think it will remain the same.
Some will always desire the more classic look and feel, just as is the case when it comes to the 14060 versus the 114060.

More popular just like the skyrocketing Tudor Monte Carlos, 1655s, 14060s, Tudor Snowflakes, 16610LVs even 1675/0 ect, ect. People will want the new SD but wont want to shell out 12K OTD when they realize they can get a 16600 and a 16710, 1675/0, no date subC, a couple of new Tudors, even a new GMTIIc or a 16610LV. That is till they level out somewhere

Vintage and older pieces that have modern counterparts I believe will continue to rise in value in both the short and long term.

Agree but basically they are still the same watch apart from the overpriced ceramic insert bracelet and bit more lume on dial.Myself would now not pay the crazy retail price for this re-introduced SD,as my own 16600 has served me well for almost twenty plus years through thick and through thin. And as a fully working tool for ten plus years, and expect it will out last me so cannot see any point in changing.

Does not make a difference to me....I love mine....I will most likely get the new one as well when the time is right but the 16600 will always stay in my collection regardless.

Basically anytime a ceramic equivalent of a classic model comes out, the classic model gets discontinued and experiences a rise in price. The ceramic insert clearly is the line in the sand that separates old classic Rolex from new modern Rolex.

I think initially there may be a slight increase in interest because the new release will remind people of the old one. It will also be seen as more of a bargain.

In the long run, it won't make a big difference.

The 16600 is certainly less interesting to me than it was a week ago. I have owned four of them in the past, and my greatest wish was that Rolex would someday update it with Glidelock and a matte dial. The new one has become a "must-have for me!

Around here, stay the same. People tend to like either

1) Vintage
2) The newest

2nd hand shops are FULL of watches made from the early 90's up to right before the ceramic models came out. 16610 Subs and Sea 16600 Sea Dwellers are EVERYWHERE and in great numbers. It's rare to see ceramic models up for sale in 2nd hand shops and only certain shops specialise in Vintage. The 16600 doesn't fall in either category....new or vintage, and there's thousands and thousands of them floating around.

Well, some of the models you mention are vintage, and made in smaller numbers. Comparing a Monte Carlo to a Sea Dweller is a far stretch. I don't know about any skyrocketing 14060s...I just bought one recently for less than I paid for one in the same condition in 2011.

Your logic re the Sea Dweller fails when you look at the GMT which has been a more expensive ceramic model for years now, and the 16710 made in the 90's up until the intro of the C model on the 2nd hand market hasn't skyrocketed. Fact is, there are tens of thousands of the things out there (maybe more).

Perhaps

At first the 16600 will become less popular.

Then after a couple of years, when the smoke settles, and the excitement of the new offering wears off, people will start to view them a bit more objectively.

after that, the 16600 will begin to be looked at as more of a vintage option.

I'm sure a lot of 16600 owners feel the same way. That's why I don't think we will see many of them sell theirs for the new 116600. Like I said, both watches, although similar, will attract different buyers. I think the 16600 will continue to increase in value, but the 116600 will have very little to do with it.
