They ARE watching....

I know you guys seem to think your watch "flies under the radar".

I think maybe the Exp 1 does. Maybe a few others. But mostly, no, I don't think so. Even the exp 1 is so nice that it's clear it's a high quality piece. IMHO.

Had a meeting with some code officials at a job site the other day. I've been working with these guys for years. We are very friendly.

Sadly, I failed the inspection, but that's a different story.

Anyway, we all walked out together and they see my Audi S4. They start the whole "look how well your doing thing", and I start making my typical justifications.

Then one if them starts saying, "it's about the status". Then he points at my wrist and winks. The repeats "status".

I've never seen him even glance at my watch. I was wearing the smurf, and I am pretty certain he did not know what it actually was. I could be wrong tho.

Anyway, he saw the sub. He saw the bubble and he saw it was a rolex.

Today, I'm in Cali meeting customers and I also met with a friendly competitor. First thing he says, "nice watch". And today I was wearing my Breitling Airwolf.

Point is, I look, you guys look, and so does everyone else.

True story. Believe it or not. People do notice. And while I might get flamed for this next part: I think most people that say they prefer a low profile secretly enjoy when people notice.

I know I do. But then again, I readily admit it.

Anywho, people look at the car you drive, the clothes you wear, the bag you carry, and the watch you sport.

Life is what it is, different things matter to different people. Not to hijack the thread because it has been beaten to death in the past, but when I meet with corporate suppliers (often justifying price), I will wear an understated watch, by all means I still dress well and my 1 series BMW neither says wealth or poverty, I like to focus meetings on the business at hand. Women they say look at shoes, belts, ties on a man or so I have heard. Having a fashion conscious wife I do notice hand bags, shoes and general style in Women, with men I don't notice much, maybe if I see a watch I will process if I know what it is. Wont really change my meeting either way.

So, you like to have it noticed. Doesn't mean I do.

Rightly or not, they certainly do. Especially when you provide some sort of immaterial service, your presentation is undoubtedly a significant part of how people evaluate your ability to provide quality work. Failing to aknowledge that is, imho, simply fooling yourself.

It's funny, or ironic, that with that post, this is what you pick up. Interesting to say the least.

Did you lose the job because they noticed a nice car and watch?

Their "status" comments sound a little bitchy.

Not so much noticing going on in this neck of the wilderness.

Not a hijack at all. I completely get ur point.

Sadly or not, it's part of our culture.

I tend to focus on the business at hand as well, but part of that business means I'm reading my audience. And I use every tool at my disposal.

I sell. That's my job. But it's my business and I'm selling everyone at all times. I'm known, and have grown my business exponentially due to my reputation of being honest and having integrity, but understanding my audience is the basis of everything I do.

I'm going for a 216570. Don't think it getting noticed will be an issue.

The blue ceramic of your sub will draw attention big time. That's what got you caught ou if you ask me. Not wearing a Rolex.

Actually, what I posted was that I failed the inspection. I did not lose the job.

And I failed the inspection because the fire protection contractor, hired by the end user, broke down on the side if the road. Because he could not show, they failed the inspection.

We passed two days later when he was able to make it.

And the point if the post, was that I never noticed, that the connector noticed. Maybe you are not noticing either??

Glad your story works for you.

As I have said before, no one notices my watches, ever. No one looks, comments, snickers, laughs, ohhhs, ahhhs, or anything else.

That is fine with me.

I absolutely promise you, people will notice that beauty. I've had one, and on that one, I've seen the eyes drawn to it. No doubt about it.

Just because you don't notice them seeing it, doesn't mean they don't notice.

Just saying.

I think the watch themselves fly under the radar (talking black sub, as blue can jump out a bit more)...however, I think it's the person wearing the watch that causes non-wis to check out which watch your wearing.

There are people I work with that know nothing about watches or care, but because of some lifestyle cues that pick up from conversation, they have also taken note of which watch I wear.

I do notice, so may be they notice too.

Had 1000's of meetings with customers and/or suppliers during my long service with a multinational, but to my opinion, having a nice watch, was positive.

If they had also something similar, we could chat on that and become more friendly.

IMO a watch or a car cannot turn down a win-win meeting.

I think your story requires context.

In my case, I wear long sleeve shirts most days and I work in a cubicle office environment, mostly by myself.

Again, no one notices. Almost no one wears a watch, those that do wear fashion watches or G Shocks.

No one has any idea what I wear even if they see my shirt cuff raised. No one has ever asked about my watch. No one has ever commented on my watch. I have worked in the same location at the same job for the last five years.

I notice them not seeing because as someone interested in watches, I am looking at theirs, if they have one. They are not looking at mine. If anything people are far more interested in phones and tablets than watches.

Again, in my case, no one notices and that is fine with me.

I agree, Seth. People are very observant and pick up on more than you think. Especially when in a business environment with those that are good at picking up context clues and are astute by nature.

Fair enough. Please grant me this:

I did say "most" people. Not all people.

X2. Mine is always under my sleave.

Protip: it's about the details, folks. Pants pressed, shoes polished, etc. Fancy watch? M'eh. Less so in my book.

I'll just say it again, I'd rather not have people notice or comment on it.

I understand your point. I think it is how they acknowledge it that makes a difference. When people say it is all about "status", that isn't the case for many. I think people who jump to conclusions about why people buy what they do are often mistaken. I'd rather hear "oh you like watches" than "nice status symbol". Far too often, everyone assumes status.

And I do the exact opposite.

Jenas or khakis to work. Laundered, not dry cleaned. Never pressed. Shoes are always scuffed or I'm wearing boots.

My favorite ensemble includes a hoodie and my north face vest. But I do wear a "fancy" watch.

And I've got two businesses that are excessively busy.

Ok. So why do you think people assume status?

Are you sure you understand my point? Because it appears not.

But what I am saying is that regardless of your intentions, people DO notice.

And again, I said most, enjoy when people notice, not all.

Well if you've owned it I guess you know better.

One thing I will say is notice isn't always good. Do I want to get noticed when I bump into one of my teachers who said I could t make it? Yup. Do I want it to be noticed when I'm stood outside a club and a rowdy bunch of lads walk past? Nope

In my experience there are two types of haters. Jealous ones like your status guys and general do gooders. The ones who will tell you that you could of given the money to charity etc.

Many of the wealthiest people I know don't wear flashy watches but they also won't make a negative comment. I can't think of a single reason for them. Commenting on my watch won't increase your status and I'm not gonna sell it the next day and give it all to charity.

Sadly, I've owned 5. I always flip it. but I do love it

And all I can really say is this guy was not jealous. He was not malicious. I'm very friendly with these guys. It was a fun dialogue.

The point was. He noticed. And I never knew it until he said it.

I agree some people watch, stare or observe what other people are wearing, be it clothes, shoes, jewelry, watch, hats, etc. I see a lot of this in airports when waiting to board for a flight. I look at other people's watch and I have seen people looking at my watch. No biggie in my book.
