New SD care advice.....

When i take my watch off at night and go to bed, how should i position the watch overnight? should i lay it face down (sapphire crystal facing down) or should i lay it face up (crystal face up). I remember hearing something about laying it face down so that the oils in the watch can work its way back out, i.e. all day long the watch is face up on the wrist, so overnight i heard its best to put it face down.

At home I leave it on the bedside locker during sleep time. Dial up.

If I had to take it off during bed time, it will be on its side, crown up.

However I wear my watch(es) to bed.

Never lie it on the crystal. Lay it on its side with the crown up. Make sure it is on something soft so it won't scratch.

Really would not worry about it, i sometimes wear mine to bed or place it carefully on a cloth on the nightstand

Rub it counter clockwise with cheese cloth and hum the Rolex theme song 14 times. Then, take a baby bird's feather and dance upside down and dip in into cold water 1.7564 times.

Then dry it with a synthetic cow's skin and lay it flat for 3.456 hours.

Upon completion - it is ready for wear again.

Nick, you know that's absolute rubbsih. How could you forget the part about wearing it while standing in front of a mirror and peeling an apple by candlelight at midnight?

Diesel, whatever way you lay the watch down isn't going to make a whole lot of difference to the oils. Think about it - how often is your watch actually dial-up while it's on your wrist? Okay, okay for the first few weeks it'll spend a lot of time in that position while you're ogling it, but if your arm's down by your side or resting on a desktop, the dial's pretty much facing sideways, isn't it?

You can change the resting position of your watch (dial up, crown up etc) to make minor compensations if it's running fast or slow, but otherwise it doesn't make much of a difference. Here are a couple of things that do make a difference:

- If you go into seawater or dusty areas, do make a point to rinse out your watch regularly and clean it under water with a soft toothbrush as recommended in the manual; sedimentation between the links can accelerate bracelet wear
- Yes, you can take your SD into the shower with you
- Unless you really (and I mean REALLY) know what you're doing, don't bother polishing your watch - when you send it in for a service, Rolex will polish it to the point where it looks like it never left the box
- Don't drop your SD; if you do, don't tell anyone on the forum about it. Speaking from personal experience, you'll never live it down

If I had an SD and it behaved, ( kept good time thougout the day ), I'd make sure and leave it in a box at night.
A special box with some soft tissue in it, and the most important thing, a datejust. A ladies DJ if possible, but any DJ will do, because I feel that every good SD deserves a night of 'private intimacy' with the fairer sexed watches.

My wife doesn't have a Rolex, and I have a DateJust, so I put it together in a box with my wife's BaumMercier. Hers is just quartz, so my DJ took a while to warm up to it, but they get along famously now.

I would post some video on the net, but both of these watches are under 2 y ears old, and I am not gonna get busted for kiddie-porn. But you get the idea.

I never wear my watch in bed, I just take it off and leave in my watch draw. That way in the morning when I put it on again, I get that warm feeling again

Great post James afraid most of the Rolex watches now get a very pampered life. And yes the SD and the rest of the oyster case watches will take just about everything the average person will give it it there daily wear. Plus a hell of a lot more,and like the rest have said its not going to make a big difference whatsoever the position you rest watch off wrist.The amount of oil needed to lubricate a Rolex movement would fit on a few pinheads its a tiny tiny amount.
