Ice!

No, not the bling kind, the real kind.....as in ice storm.

A few years ago we had yet another ice storm in Southern Ontario - we get these every few years. The worst one I recall was back in the late 70's, when we were out of school for 2 weeks and didn't have electricity for about 10 days. The one in these photos was not nearly that serious.......Hope you enjoy these - not quite as good as I'd hoped as I used my scanner at home to scan in the hardcopy prints.

First, an image down my street......

Second is a close shot of a small bush.......shows the general thickness of the ice.

We went for a drive that day to take some photos. no matter how hard I tried I could not capture the "sparkle" of the ice as it appeared live. I was quite disappointed in this when I received the prints back. Not sure how this can be captured, if at all........

This one shows what was a truly spectacular scene in real life. The sun was out and virtually everything was covered in ice. The fence, the tall grass along the side of the road, and all the trees were sparkling away like mad.

Al, I've been trying to capture the aftermath of an ice storm for years and I'm now convinced that it can't be done. At least not to the detail and beauty that the human eye sees.

Just after P and I started dating the dreaded ice storm hit Ottawa and western Quebec, the one that down hydro towers and thousands of trees? We came up a month later and the devestation was unbelievable. My in-laws had no power for a week!

Even still today, if you drive up Hwy 416 from the 401 to Ottawa, you can see bent, broken and felled trees from that storm.

If that's not a photoshop, then that's truly amazing how the thin ice along the length is supporting the weight on top!!

ND - is that North Dakota? If so, it's definitely not the same storm....that would be thousands of km's from where I am.

No doubt that pic is real. I have seen similar things happen here with signs after an ice storm - good job for whoever took that picture as they don't normally last long!
