Apple Watch Launches! Is This The Rolex Killer?
Do Not get Me wrong, I love "Jake's Rolex Blog" but i have to scratch my head at the recent attention it is Paying to the "Apple Watch" and how it could be competition to analogue watches and Swiss ones at that? Its a digital watch? a non descript piece? does not come it Stainless,Gold,Platinum or Silver let alone have any gem's and will appeal to people who are only interested in "apple products"

i just don't see the need to carry a smartphone and wear a connected watch at the same time. so, i went with "who cares?" since i love rolex and other mechanical watches, too.

For the 98% of the population who don't own a mechanical watch anyway the I-watch will be something of interest. For those that purchase high end time pieces currently for reasons other than strictly knowing what time it is, this is just another wrist gadget and will not change our buying habits.

Big article on this in today's Washington Post (11 Sep 14), with a great photo of......a Platinum Daytona. Hilarious that the article was about the iWatch replacing mechanicals and the photo is not of an iWatch, but rather the epitome of watch-making: Platona.

The Apple Watch is targeted at totally different market segment than the segment of mechanical watches for the enthusiast/WIS. In my view, its practicality vs. luxury.

I would guess there will be little to no impact. Two entirely different value propositions.

Who cares. I don't want a wrist device that I have to tether to my phone. I love mechanical watches and could care less about the iWatch thingy.

As long as it needs the phone to operate, then you really don't need both. It really is just an external monitor/mouse for your phone. It amounts to nothing more than a convenience, sort of like the watch winder. And if it does become an independently functioning device then it's really competing with the phone and due to the size limitations of the watch the phone has some significant inherent advantages like screen size, power, and performance. The watch will never be able to outperform the phone given the difference in how much electronics can be crammed into each. The small screen is a real problem. People want bigger screens, not smaller. Even Apple followed the competition on this with the i6. Try to find a high end phone with even a 4" screen anymore. So I just don't see it replacing the phone. Given that most will continue to carry a phone, how successful will it be? Certainly some will want one, but whether enough will choose to do so to make it a success by Apple standards is not a foregone conclusion. Rolex will do just fine. In fact, my AD assured me there's even a price increase coming soon.

I'd love to find a way to pull off wearing both at once, but since that's pretty unrealistic from a fashion point I'm going to have to stick to Rolex. Chronometers will always beat smart watches in my book!
