What defines "vintage"?

Is it Rolex with service or a date of manufacturing? Is it you, with your tastes? Is it market with anything that isn't currently manufactured?

As we talk about modern and vintage watches, help me understand. Can someone give me a defintion please?

For me vintage is having an acryllic crystal.

Any watch that is older than 15 years i consider it a vintage

It was earlier but rolex watches had tritium dials and hands. Since rolex is not using tritium stuff anymore these watches are considered to be vintage

It's a question that gets asked from time to time and I'm not sure there's a definite answer.

I think most collectors view vintage as being twenty-five years of age or older.
Most say the watch should have a plastic crystal and/or matt dial. Certainly the piece will have a movement no longer being used, but a mere change to an existing movement doesn't necessarily qualify.

I do think that as certain references gain in years in the future we will re-visit what constitutes "vintage".

In today's definition, watches that have acrylic crystal or at least 20 yrs. old are considered vintage. So 20 yrs. down the road, the SDD that just came out will be considered vintage as well.

It also depends on manufacturer, as Seiko were using saphire crystals in there divers in the 70's.

People define vintage in many ways as it is a term often used in different cases.

I for one define "vintage" as a watch model that is no longer currently being produced, in other words

ceased production or is now obsolete. This can range from a wide variety of models from the first Sub,

to the 16710 GMT II. Yes thats right, by my definition, the 16710 GMT II that was discontinued last

year, I would consider vintage...However a 16610 from 1990 is NOT considered a vintage compared to

a 16710 from say 2006 because the 16610 is still in production.
