NOS Ladies Datejust 1995-Does it Need Service

A good friend of mine bought his wife a TT Ladies Datejust 69173 back in 1995. He has all box/papers. The watch has been worn maybe 30 times since then and is virtually brand new(she just isn't a jewelry type person).

I'm thinking of buying it for my wife but have concerns about it's reliability without a RSC full service. I've had the watch the last 3 days and it's keeping perfect time.

What are your thoughts on the watch needing service since I'm trying to make a fair offer to my buddy. Thanks.

I wouldn't service it yet but I would definitely take a service into account for pricing purposes...

It's not so much that it will fail or not work properly, it's about the seals and gaskets. These need to be replaced periodically to ensure that your watch is waterproof.

It is good insurance at this time to have it serviced to ensure it is in like-new condition and good for a decade of continual use without issue..

Excellent advice. That's what I'd do.

I once bought several old Tudors from a huge collection a guy I met over in Germany they were all like new in there boxes with all the papers and bits. Now these watches were all around 30 years old and as far as I know never been worn or wound up for 25- 30 years. But before parting with quite a large sum of cash I wound and started them all they all ran perfect. And I sold most when I got back to the UK but kept a few back and one Tudor Princess for the wife. Now this watch as far as I know had been stopped for 30 plus years. It ran perfect but after a month of the wife wearing I did give it to my watchmaker friend to service it.And when he opened the case back movement was like new and still oil on the vital parts and this was the old type mineral oil and not the modern synthetic type. But he did give it a quick lube job and new seals although he said seals looked good. And that was 14 years ago and the watch has been worn almost daily by the wife and has run perfect but now way overdue for a service. So I would have the wife wear the watch for a few weeks or so and if keeping good accurate time plan for a service soon next year budget for that in price paid. Now if wife is going to submerse watch in water it would be wise to have pressure check and most high street watchmakers could do this test.

Thanks for all the advice.I will move forward with an offer that considers the cost of having it serviced.
