I don't know what I prefer....
I feel that my Day-Date is a watch that no longer gets wrist time, so I'm most likely going to trade it in. Even if I change the dial on the DD I still don't think I am going to be happy.
My dilemma is that I don't know whether to trade it in for a PAM127 or a Daytona WG 116509. Now I know most of you ladies and gentlemans do have a liking for Rolex, but notwithstanding, I would like to know what you thought about this choice. I am interested to hear what Panerai owners or enthusiasts may feel. PAM127 -47mm but a very flat case so it sits quite well on the wrist; -Limited Edition only 1950 ever made. -Display back -Increased in value over 100% in the last 5 years. Now a Panerai icon for collectors. -COSC certified with papers. -ETA modified (non-auto) movement. -300 feet water resistant. -Lots of leather straps to wear. WG Daytona -40mm -Legendary Chronograph (auto wind) movement. - Z serial with warranty. -COSC with papers. -Solid White Gold case, bracelet and Daytona clasp. -300feet water resistant The price difference isn't great and so that isn't a factor to take into account, and assume both watches are in mint condition.

Sorry to do this on the Rolex website, but....Steve, if you're looking for a Daytona I'd pick the meteorite dial or the SS - those are the only that really fire up my soul. But the Panerai, with it's increasingly iconic status - gosh, that's just a great watch. Go for the Pam.

I would go for the Daytona, Steve, out of the two choices.
Is there any particular features you want on the watch? If I may offer another choice, it would be the IWC Spitfire, I have wanted one of these for years. |

I don't get Paneria. I wish I did, but for some reason I just can't get into it. They look too big and too simple, plus they are so easy to find good fakes of. They also look clunky to me and lack the elegance of a Rolex... Also even though the Paneria is put forth as a diving watch you cant get the leather band wet...I know you can probably get a rubber band for it...but having to change it is not fun.
I don't like the Daytona because I am not crazy about upside down arabic numerals. That being said, I would consider one of these Daytonas if I were you. I think they have better visual interest on the Dial whether it is mother of Pearl or Metiorite. The silver dial on the White Gold Daytona looks a little flat to me. Kind of cold and sterile, lacking warth and looks too much like a stopwatch to me. Also, I believe the two daytonas I put up are stainless so you would save some money. Also Steve, since you are the owner of the RolexForum I think that when you talk to people in person they would find these watches much more interesting...Plus, both of these watches have more of an Outback Australian vibe to me...The WG stopwatch Daytona you put up has more of a Germanic Tuetonic vibe.

IWC isn't on my radar screen, don't get me wrong I respect their watches but it doesn't reach out to me.
The metorite dial is just not my style.

With all due respect, Steve.....if you've really got that kind of money to spend, just wait for the 41 mm DD.
I know I would. JJ

It is a Rolex forum here so the daytona will get the votes
However I have owned a Pam 127 and it is one of the best watches ever made If you can get one around 20000 USD go for it, it is a winner The WG Daytonas do nothing for me

Ra ra ra... Rollie Rollie Rollie... Get the Daytona, because it's a Rolex. Forget the Rest, Rollie is Best...
NOT. In my opinion, the PAM takes the cake here for several reasons. First, we've been asked which of the two, not a 41mm DD, or Meteorite dial or Leopard skin or whatever. Of the two presented here, I vote for the PAM. The WG Daytona is antithetical to the whole notion of a sports watch. This I happen to believe for any other sports watch in anything other than stainless steel. The PAM 127 is truly a rare model, with good collectability and is part of the original Panerai re-launch model range, when they were building watches from the 'legacy' designs. Price has indeed doubled, and in terms of potential ROI, it's all over the WG Daytona. The dial of the PAM is wonderfully simple and clear, and due to the arabics, the WG Daytona dial appears to me to be incomplete and misproportioned. |

Please share the appeal of the Paneria
I don't understand the appeal of the Paneria. Would somebody please educate me on its appeal?

Gotta go for the Daytona...I'd love a spacerock Cos....unless I get a novel published, it's a pipedream!!!!!
I'm with the other Batsh*t Rolex fans here, I just don't see the appeal of Panerai. I understand they are kinda cool looking but they aint half as pretty as a Rolex! J PS I also love IWC Spitfires...spesh my fave Bluesy II, the Sport Laureus edition!!!! |

I'd take the WG Daytona. The 127 is a rare bird, but that much cash for a watch with a worked-up ETA movement? Come on!!!

Go on Steve, make the jump, it won't be your first PAM, and it'll be diversifying, if not edifying.
If you had to get a Daytona, I'd say go for a stainless. |

Oh no, Steve - can't believe you're going to flip the DD.
It's got to be the Daytona as a worthy replacement for such a world class icon IMO. Whichever way you go, I reckon another DD will come along and get you - even a DD II.

Steve,
I voted for the Panerai. If the Daytona were white gold with a meteorite dial the I would have selected the Daytona Quote:
They are not for everyone. I said the same thing and then I spent some time on their website looking at watches. I went to the AD also. I really like some of their simple designs and the sapphire casebacks on the manual wind models Sean

Hi Steve
I think for investment the Panerai is the obvious choice. But to wear on a regular basis.........................NEITHER. |
