Would you go for service if.....
Guy, would you go for Service if your Rolex (with COSC of course) for service if it is running 5-7 seconds faster per day? I am referring to Rolex sport models in particularly and the warranty has expired.
Should I? |

I don't know, how old is it? If it's due for a servicing have it regulated too.

Well, it depends, I'd say.
Key word to accuracy is consistancy. So if your Rolex is consistantly going 6-7 secs. fast a day, then you actually have a very precise watch that would just need some regulating. If it keeps speeding up, though, which automatic movts. in need of service tend to do, I'd get it serviced.

But according to this:
http://www.chronocentric.com/watches/accuracy.shtml COSC is limited to +/-3 seconds extreme. If my watch gains 7 seconds per day, which means 3.5 mins in 30 days. SO one year says 12 months, it will gain 42 mins!!! |

Having a watch that needs a periodic regulation is a large step from having a watch that needs a major service.
At more than 5 seconds off per day, I would take it to my AD or a respectable watchmaker and have it regulated....

My P series GMT II which is by far my most accurate watch! I bought it in 2000/2001. I did not know about timing of watches until I became a WIS freak in late 2004. So I timed it in April 2005, it was an ASTONISHING +1 seconds in 30 days! I wore it for 30 days straight 24/7 on my wrist during that period of timing! No kidding!!! It was damn accurate!!!
So last year I increased my collection of Rolex based on my confident in Rolex as per above. In Dec last year, I wanted to upgrade my GMT II to the new GMT II ceramic (I did), I decided to timed it for one last time before I bid goodbye to it. So I timed it on 8 Dec '07 to 8 Jan '08, it was alittle off +8 seconds!!!! I would say it is DEAD ON!!! Oh btw, I did not service it since day one!!! So recently I bought an used minty DAYTONA P series too. I timed it and it was 5-7 seconds per day. :( Hence I was thinking to send it for service or not. I mean it needs regulation, but my question is also, I do not want to send it just for regulation, maybe for a FULL SPA including repolishing. It does not need repolishing though cos it is still in very good condition. The AD in my small town does not do it but it will send to another town to do the job. The cost is FROM Euro350 for Sport models. I reckon the DAYTONA might cost more as it is a chrono. Thus, if I send it for just regulating, it is a waste if I did not send for servicing and repolishing. But again it is MINTY and does not need polishing at the moment. But the +7 secs per day is bothering me a little to be honest. SHOULD I SEND IT IN FOR SPA treatment??? |

No I would not worry about that much time loss. Heck, my '74 DJ looses 10 min a month and I don't worry about it. But that is just me. Enjoy the watch and when it is due for a service, send it in. They are built very well and should last a lifetime+. The '84 GMT RootBeer I sold a few weeks ago had never been serviced and it would only loose 2min a month. Only problem with the GMT not being serviced was the watchmaker trying to get the case back removed, he almost didn't get it off! Cheers, Wesley

Personally at that rate i wouldn't. The COSC spec is not more than 6 sec. But i would if it was 9 or 10 seconds fast.

Well...it looks like being a WIS only brings pain and sorrow instead of pleasure and joy, doesn't it? Relax guys....enjoy your watch in good physical health and mental health!

I wouldn't do it. You're barely out of COSC specs.

Being a WIS guy is good and bad!
As I said, I became more careful while wearing my watches, thus scratches and scuffs do not occur so often. That means I might have to wait a little longer before I send it in for SPA. Well I think I have to start rotating my wrist time with other watches more often, so the GAIN on my Daytona will be lesser! Btw, I do not own winders. Don't intent to buy one too. |
