Anyone own the PAM505?

HI Guys,

So after obsessing about Rolex, I'm kind of put off them with all the issues they're having etc. So I've started to look back at Panerai where I first started before I decided to go with Rolex.

I've narrowed down my search to a PAM505, really like the look of this watch, but a bit concerned about the thickness. Comes in at a whopping 17.5mm. So does anyone own this particular watch and how is it to live with? Pictures would be great. I yet still need to go and try one on, but I've always loved the look of Panerai, and it will be my next watch to finalise my collection....for now lol

I want an automatic, I know the manual watches are a lot slimmer but I can not be bothered with the winding, especially with a screw down crown, makes me uncomfortable. I'd be happy to hear of any other alternatives, but I am pretty set on the 505. Plus after that the prices shoot up quite a bit.

Hi I do have one its O series 2012 very comfortable watch a bit thick but you will like it the best thing just go to AD to try one I hope they have one in stock

Now you're just showing off lol . But on a serious note, it does look lovely! Really like that greyish look it has. Do you have a side shot of it sitting on your wrist, would love to see how high it sits on the wrist. Don't have time at the moment to go out to any AD, and by the time I do have time they're closed.

505 is a great piece! just be sure to understand that the composite material is a sort of treated aluminum and not ceramic, and OP has had varying degrees of success with the material. but, needless to say, it is a beauty.

I read all about the material on the Panerai website, I came to the conclusion that it was tougher than the ceramic counterparts? Did I read the info wrong? Needless to say and as you've said it is a gorgeous looking watch.

When you say the OP has had varying degrees of success, could you expand on that a bit....I'd like to hear more.

Well, "tougher" depends on in what sense. The composite will be more likely to dent with a significant impact instead of shatter like ceramic, but ceramic is more scratch resistant. While the composite is more resistant to scratches than steel or Ti, it is less resistant than ceramic, and, when scratched to the aluminum, the silver will show and it is not repairable. Of course, it takes quite a bit to do such damage.

As for OP's issues with composite, when it first came out with the 339, there were reports of discoloration, especially on the underside (the Internet theory was that certain skin types reacted badly with the composite). OP did fix these watches, but composite disappeared from the catalogue for some time. It came back briefly with the 505 and 504, but it's apparently gone again. For reasons unknown.

So, how will it age? How will it retain value? Only time will tell.

Real positives of the material are its unique nature, its gorgeous dark brown color, its light weight and its relative scratch resistance.

Thanks for the information bud. As with all things it doesn't matter what material it's made of, anything could happen at any time. Just one of those things. I totally agree though, that the colour is totally unique, I guess that is why I'm liking it. I do love panerai watches, just need to find the right one. It just has to be an automatic.
