Rolex 6241 Restoration with Non-Rolex Movement

Hey everyone, someone is trying to sell a Rolex 6241 restoration project with an older genuine swiss movement, but not a Rolex movement. Is this watch worth anything? Thanks,

I don't think you'll get as much feedback as you want without some pictures.

Any genuine 6241 part will have a value, so the watch will be worth at least the sum of these parts.

A completed, period appropriate and genuine piece will be worth tens of thousands up to many tens of thousands depending on the dial.

So, the two questions begging are :

1. What's there in the "kit"?
2. How much is the seller asking?

My gut feeling is that there was a viable goal to be made it would have already have been achieved.

Restoration project could mean anything..

If the dial has been refinished it's hard to tell what it was originally. That, and a substitute movement, it is just an oddity and not collectible so the value would be skimpy..

As said, it's parts may be more valuable if those hard to get parts are still untouched and usable to somebody with a proper restoration project.

Almost any Valjoux 72 movement could be used for a 62xx series in the absence of a genuine Rolex movement. You'd want to avoid one's that had extra complications. The older 6241 would require the lower beat V72 that Rolex modified to be the 722 to be really correct rather than the higher beat V726 that Rolex turned into the 727.

There are at least 20 other makers that used the V72 so it is not hard to find one for about $1500 in good serviced condition.

Obviously the value of the watch restored with a basic Valjoux movement would be substantially less than with a Rolex movement and will depend on what other parts are in the sale.

First off no idea where that dial came from, run don't walk.

Best to tread carefully with the V72 Daytonas. A few have lost their original movement. And it gets worse.
Five minutes on the web will locate a supplier of 'Rolex' inscribed bridge plates - so a faker can make a non-Rolex V72 look authentic once again.
Would fool a few folk - including watchmakers - but doesn't help replicate all the tricky technical changes Rolex did to their V72's.


I'm thinking that watch needs lots to get it back near original specs - this dial from my spares would help the project along.
