As a first time Rolex newbie, These are question that I wanted to ask myself.

First welcome to the forum!

Ive wanted a Rolex submariner since I was around 12! When I was 16 I had saved up enough money to get a tag heuer aqua racer which looked similar enough so I got it. But every time I went into the Rolex store and looked at the submariner I knew deep down that the aqua racer just didnt do it for me.

Ive owned various subs since my first one at 18 and now have around 5. I get such a kick out of wearing them knowing that they will probably still be ticking on my wrist when im old and have lived with me through my life. I just dont get that same feeling wearing anything else and now at 23 it still makes me happy when I slide my Rolex on in the morning, something no other watch could probably do.

Its about buying a quality product in this case a quality watch... a lot of people do the same when it comes to cars, phones, clothe, shoes, computers, TVs, etc.. It really depends on the person... Some will spend thousands on a new TV and not on a watch and vice versa...

Why the Sub? Maybe the most Iconic rolex... and yes, most people that save money for a rolex mostly buy a submariner first.

Don't need it, simply want it. And if you're lucky enough to have it, you'll cherish it...

It's a tribute to the design of the Sub that it is still with us after 60 odd years and has not changed much. Also it's simply very pleasing to look at umpteen times a day. Go for it!

-Don't need it.

-I'm sure you will get plenty of feedback. But, without being condescending, why not plug-in a search for Submariner? Read all the wonderful posts, look at all the great photographs taken by the talented people here at TRF...As a bonus you will gather tons of information on the other watches in the Rolex line, and a history of the brand in general. Then "IF" you decide on Rolex and the Sub is your choice, it is exactly that; as you have taken the time to research and ultimately make your own decision...Very rewarding experience. Enjoy!

There are a number of reasons. Firstly, it's an ageless, iconic timepiece. Secondly, the brand identifies with precision, quality, an element of exclusivity, and achievement. These are all things a lot of people aspire to and want to identify with. Thirdly, it's a recognition of something. What that something is, differs per individual. Some people associate recognition with success - or a personal reward or achievement - some with status, and some, with quality engineering. There are countless other recognition elements methinks! And fourth, well, it's a practical lifestyle watch which suits a very versatile number of environments and occasions. Fifth, it's an heirloom that can be passed down through generations and becomes a fixture in the family. Six....well, we could go on and on, couldn't we?!

People buy watches for different purposes and reasons, but for me, it was because I identified with a number of the things I mention above. I love my Sub!

Because for me, the Submariner is like the Jordan 11 of the Nike/Jordan brand of shoes. It might not be a "need" but it's a "must have". Your future Rolex collection will not be complete without it. lol

Truth is, it's really personal preference. All Rolex models are great according to their owners. I love my 1104060. Wearing them everyday since 2013.

Becuase i've wanted one since I was a very young child (for various reasons) and I got to realise that dream on my 30th birthday.

I got an Omega Seamaster at 21 but that never fully cured that itch.

Huge congrats on yours !

I am glad I have got mine earlier and not at 60 :)

what capitvated me is the engineering behind this beauty. the toughness of this watch and the accuracy. not to mentioned the series of reliability test that they have conducted and certified.
