When do "you" know it is time to flip a watch?
About a year ago I obtained what I thought would be my Grail watch. It was a 116613lb from one of the trusted sellers. I traded a 116520 Daytona black dial. The Daytona only lasted about a year. I also currently own a Breitling B1 and two Datejusts. I have owned the Datejusts and B1 the longest 5 years or so. Honestly, the 116613lb sits in my safe and I wear one of my Datejusts most of the time. As I type this, I probably have not worn the sub for about two weeks. I would like to add a Hublot to my collection. Moving the 116613lb would allow me two do this now. I realize this is a Rolex forum and this would probably not be a popular decision here. However, I am just not wearing The 116613lb. And I like the modern look, feel, and materials used by Hublot. Plus I feel like I could wear the Hublot and be more undercover then when I strap on one of my Rolex watches.
With that said, I still like the 116613lb but I don't feel like it is getting the attention it deserves as it is the most expensive piece in my collection. I lusted after the Daytona and sub for so long, that I think once I finally achieved acquiring them the thrill of ownership did not last too long. But at the rate that Rolex increases their prices I am afraid that if I left the sub go I will not be willing or able to pull the trigger again. Hence, the flippers dilemma ! I have flipped watches before. Sure I miss them, but I have yet to replace any models that I have moved on. Do I continue on my watch journey and flip to the next coveted model? Or do I hold on and wait until I can add another piece to my collection. I am also concerned about collecting too many watches that end up sitting in a safe instead of getting worn and appreciated on a regular basis. Not to mention the up keep costs associated with having to maintain a large collection of high-end watches. I will also add for your consideration that I am not a one watch guy. I like to have at least a few to interchange. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Seems like a pretty simple answer--if you are not wearing it, why have it? Sell it.

Only if you've made one of those fashion mistakes that most people make at least once, sometimes under delusion or alcoholic confusion. You will look at your collection in a sober moment of reflection and know which watch it is!

When I start to wear one because I feel obligated to or making excuses about why I am not wearing it then it is time for it to go.

Modern blue sub for a Hublot of similar value, I could not do it. Resale on that Hublot could be a rough one if ever needed.

I think you should flip. Watches are made for you to enjoy, not be safe queens. I would flip for the hublot and enjoy it!

I flipped my tags and a breitling when I got my first Rolex. I knew it was time. I didn't wear them for months.
I haven't flipped a watch since and have acquired 4 more pieces. I am beginning to get e urge to flip again, as I have little desire to exceed 5 or so watches. Go for it, get what you want life is too short. |

This is a dilemma for me too. I have some watches that I feel obligated to keep, but I don't wear them anymore. I feel guilty for just thinking about flipping them, but in all honesty they would actually see the light of day on somebody else's wrist.
Think of the watch, not yourself. |

The watches may be different, but I have had and have the same feelings as you expressed - fear of missing a flipped watch, not wanting to tie up too much funds in watches, and also the fear of having watches just sit there (that represent large sums of money) that you are no longer enjoying.
It's tough to decide, just make sure you really think it through. Once you have, make the flip. |

It's a bit like any relationship, you might still love the person/watch but you know when the day comes that you are no longer in love and then decisions need to be made.

When you've lost that lovin' feeling. The trick is to know when that truly is and not just a passing fancy.

There is no way I would trade / sell my 116613LB for any Hublot. No offense to your taste. Just my honest opinion.

So you kept the stainless Daytona for a year and the Bluesy has been with you for about a year now too? Seems me me like the same thing might happen with the Hublot. Not a big deal - just making an observation.

When you don't wear it anymore and don't feel excited about the prospect of wearing it.
