Why no new Red sub?
So I debated where to post this- here or vintage discussion... I suposse it will be seen either way.
But anyway, my thought was, what if you took a modern sub (by that I mean 16610 with aluminum bezel insert- no ceramics) and have the red Submariner script on a printed dial- no applied white gold indicies. Maybe follow the Omega lead and do a LE of say 1969 units to commereate the year the red sub was released (although I guess it was late '68 when they started and I have heard reports of as early as '65 too). Maybe "patina" the lume a bit for good measure. Go all-out and have a folded bracelet made by whatever company is making the 1171 for Omega now. The retro Tudors are really cool, and quite popular as well. I don't think Rolex could lose on this one. Anyway, if they did it, I would not want a big(er) case or a ceramic bezel (the latter the only fault I have with the re-issued Seamaser 300) and what the heck- pull out the click spring and let the bezel free and put an acrylic cyclops plexi on it too for good measure. Only good to 200 meters, but for desk diving, that's just enough. I think it would be a cool retro model and would probably sell out before it was officially released unless the number of them increased (or it was not limited) but I'd be very interested in a 16610-ish red with cyclops plexi and silver date wheel... How about you? |

Sorry, but I'd rather stick to the vintage Red Submariner. That's what makes it so cool

I love this idea. And there's a place for both. I appreciate all that comes with vintage watches, but a brand-new version offers several benefits: more robust, modern construction. A fresh and current parts production line. Water and environmental resistance, that offers the peace of mind knowing you can wear it in any conditions (normal/office, or rougher duty), and it will withstand - and, should something go horribly wrong, replacement parts are available that WON'T devalue or otherwise change your watch.
A good analog to this is the Omega Speedmaster Professional. I have two "pre-moon" references - which are the actual references (with calibre Ω321 movement) that actually went to the moon. But I also have a brand-new, current production Speedmaster Professional. Very subtle differences between the two - if you put both down in front of your typical non-watch friend or family member, they wouldn't (and don't!) distinguish one over the other - but it is still really nice seeing, wearing, and enjoying a factory-fresh example with perfect dial, perfect lume, perfect case, bezel, and hands. I think something similar can apply here. Yeah, sign me up for this too. I'd love to see a NCG big crown Submariner no-date. Thanks for suggesting! |

It would be lovely!
The exp II uses a nice orange lettering along with a few other models.

Well I'm not holding my breath, but at roughly 1/10th the true red vintage cost, with a full warranty... What's not to love!
Perfect for the vintage sub owner too, as indicated with the speedy owner above: wear the vintage for special occasions and wear the new version every day. Hey, a red sub with working lume! How cool would that be? |

I'm dying for a Red Sub right now, even if it was just a standard 116610 as is with just the red text it would fit perfect between my 114060 and BLNR.

I can't see it happening, Rolex seem to be moving in a more modern direction with their latest Basel releases, plus Red would interfere with sales of the Subc and just as a ceramic Daytona would affect sales of the existing ones, I don't think Rolex will rock this boat as the introduction of the ceramic was a big move already.

I said similar in a "dream" Rolex thread. Also want a re-issue of the milsub, the 6263, the 6541. I don't think Rolex is keen to do the retro thing, but who knows, maybe someday.

A red sub remake would be awesome, as well as a sub with sword hands.
However, I don't think this is the direction Rolex will go. Their new release don't really impress me. The new Tudors are pretty awesome though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think they will in fact remake the Red Sub, however, when they do....which could be 5 years from now or a 105 years from now, it will be in platinum at some outrageous cost that will somehow even makes the WG Pepsi seem bargain priced! Additionally, I doubt highly that they will officially stamp it in limited numbers as that is just not their style. That said, you can be sure that they will certainly produce them in short quantity, instruct the AD's to keep them in the safe, and tell people that there is a 5 year waiting list to get one! |

Honestly maybe I'll just buy a 116610 and have a good dial painter do this, who's the best dial painter in the US? Could ABC handle this?

Love this idea! I think there is definitely a place for this in their lineup. I love vintage, but am just hesitant to buy them because they just feel a bit more fragile than modern pieces. I have owned the SM300 reissue for a couple weeks now and am loving it!

I can see no reason why it would hold more value than any other modern Rolex.

Rolex might do something like this if they wanted to spur Sub sales. Since I assume they are selling every one they can make, I don't think we'll see it anytime soon.
Why do I say this? Rolex seems to do something with a model to generte interest when sales lag; e.g., the new Pepsi to spur interest in the GMT C generally, which I don't think is a big seller; or the return of the sunburst bluesy dial in place of the flat blue; or the Deepsea SD. I wish they would, I love a splash of red on a dial. I would not want faux patina though; the watches I've seen with it look phony (just my opinion); and it would look phony on a sub. Kind of like those expensive tribute guitars complete with nicks and gouges as on the original. Patina is the result of decades of ownership and appreciation, why would you want to fake that? |

I would truly love to have one.

Why no new Red sub?
I think what makes the Red Submariner so cool is because when you see it you know it's vintage. When you see someone wearing it you know they are a serious vintage collector.
