Is the "WIS Business" for the guys only?

Hi everyone,

It hit me today.. I guess I'm a late bloomer.. But is it my imagination or majority of the high end manufacturers focus mainly on models for men ?.

I actually dropped an email today to Dornbluth to see if they can get make me a Ladies model.. I highly doubt it.

Would Women get into this more if they were included?

Yep, pretty much a men's game.

My Mom has always likes watches, not a WIS or anything, she's really a Jewlery Gal, and watches just fit into that nicely. I think most women who buy high end watches are generally into Jewlery, and they view watches the same way as a diamond bracelet or necklace.

Watch enthusiasts are mostly men, but there is no shortage of options for women. Rolex, Omega, AP, PP, etc... all make watches for women. A lot of "men's" watches can easily be worn by women as well. Richard Mille, for example, had a large focus on women's watches this year at SIHH.

I suspect allot of the high end, complicated women's pieces are purchased by their husbands who are major watch lovers, not women purchasing them for themselves. For example, after I got my first Patek I showed my wife wife the Patek Twenty4 for an anniversary gift, she said she already has enough watches that I got her, and wanted something else. I really wanted to get her the Twenty4, thought it would be a cool match to my 5146g grey dial to get the Grey dial Twenty4.

I believe that was the concept behind FP Journes new line of ladies watches, the husbands are serious collectors, and they want to get their wife into their hobby, or at least share some of their interest with them.

I'm sure there are many exceptionsto this, and there are serious collectors who are female, but this is my completely unfounded and unreaserched take on it.

Part of it may be practical. Complicated movements tend to be (relatively) big. As such, cases are correspondingly larger than usual for women's sizes.

I think men, in general, just enjoy hobbies like this more. My wife and all her friends just don't get how men are so focused on hobbies.

Frankly, you are all right. I wish my Wife "got it".
I wear a new watch for 6 months and at dinner my Wife will ask.. "is that new?".
