Winter Wonderland

These were taken a couple of weeks ago. I think we got close to 25cm overnight, and it was thick, wet snow that caused some tree branches to bend and/or break under the weight. Normally my snowblower can do our four car drive, walkway and the end of the drive (after the plow blocks me in) using less than a tank of gas. But because the snow was so wet and heavy, I used more than a tank. Further, the blower got clogged a couple of times.

That blower must have been a b!tch to push, eh?

Maybe that's why you used more gas.....takes longer when you push it.

Those are lovely pics, Johnny...like looking at a picture postcard!! That snow does look fluffy and so inviting, but I think I'd rather stick with the warm weather we are having here, thank you!!

Hey tosser, I fixed it. It was the cable spring that needed replacing.

Besides, if the motor isn't using extra power to drive the transmission/tires, it should use LESS gas, Mr. Engineer!

That does look nice. If we were to get snow like that around here it would literally shut the area down. Four inches or so overwhelms us around here.

Before Christmas we had a dump of 35cm in one 24 hour period. Pretty significant, even by our standards. Our articulated buses proved to be useless as the engine/drive wheels are behind the articulation, causing the buses to jack-knife. It snarled traffic for a few hours. But the city chugged on anyways.

BTW, the pile of snow at the end of my driveway (thanks to the city plow and me snowblowing) at one point stood 5.5 feet tall. Now it's about 4 feet. It's been pretty freakish weather lately. The last two weeks have seen temps above 0C, so the pavement on the street is clear, and I can see grass patches on my lawn. But we had about 10cm fall overnight, last night.

Wow, a 5'5" pile of snow. I'd need a snorkel if I fell in that The weather has been pretty odd here too. 60f in the day then down to low 30'sf at night. Thats very warm for this time of year, but even when it is cold we still seem to miss the snow. Because we're right on the ocean the warmer temps of the water seems to turn it all to rain

Ottawa generally gets more of a continental climate (like the prairies), so we get more weather from the arctic. Typically in winter Ottawa gets a ton of snow and long bouts of -20C temps (as the daytime high).

Al (avalon) and I are amazed at how different our weather is, considering I'm 'only' about 150 miles north of him, albeit, some 650km east... but we're in the same province.

Have the two of you ever met up for lunch or dinner?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I don't think I could get use to that. I see what you mean by the short distance and vast weather changes. Northwestern Pennsylvania and New York state are the big skiing ares around here. They're both a fairly short drive from me, yet they are very cold and get a ton of snow, whereas here, nada, nothing, zip

I don't know about that JJ. They say that even if you lop a couple of feet of a snake it can still move around for hours.

The snow pictures look beautiful, John. Glad it's you that took them and not me.

Thinking what that stuff would do to us in DC, I'm very thankful we've been having a mild winter down here. I believe the weatherman said that DC had 25 days of 60F+ in January. That suits me just fine.

Then I think I should feel highly honoured. Here I am, literally thousands of miles away from Al and he and his sweet wife take the trouble of coming all the way to meet up with Zemina and me.

There you are, a mere snowball's throw away...and you guys still haven't met? For shame!!

Hey 600km may as well be 6,000 when neither of you have a specific reason to go to the other's city. And 600km is a loooooong drive. It's easier to fly to NZ than to drive from London to Ottawa.

You are correct that the consumption rate would be less, however would be offset by the additional time taken to do the job. You see, I was assuming that you pushed it at a similar rate to what you used when getting it fixed (i.e. very slowly!).

Besides, you work for the government, so you only have one speed - slow!

Never ASSume, Al, and you know why.

When I was pushing it, I push it at my walking speed, which is pretty quick (and also is partially why the blower got clogged a few times. I didn't allow enough time for the snow to be cycled out of the chute.

Well said, Padi. If it gets to the coasts of the Isle of Wight or Cornwall we really do have problems! Normally I only see a couple of frosts per year and snow... well practically never.

That suits me fine!
