thanks for the share. great stuff!

when I heard Jochen Rindt's f1 Lotus a few years ago, it sounded like an angry SR71 with laryngitis.

.
.. Hard to say which is better, but either way, the changes are quite noticeable over the years...
...Monaco.. is a RUSH.. if you've ever been. Especially if you're sitting at the pit exit as they're screaming out of the pits and excellerating into turn 1..
Ear plugs were useless.......!!

Re noise: For me it's a bit like the noisy un-muffled exhaust on a Harley (or any M/C).
What's the point except to draw attention to the rider.(Look at me!)
It doesn't sound good, just loud (not the same thing unless you're 20yrs old)
Sports/Muscle cars also - there's just loud, and then there's that lovely deep burble.
You don't have to deafen people for it to sound good.
Whether it's a rock concert or a motor race, I don't want to have to wear ear-plugs to protect my hearing.

the point of loud (loud, thoaty rumble, not loud as in rumble glass from blocks away) pipes on a motorcycle is simple (respectfully), and it is exactly to notice me:

The point of louder pipes is to alert all the cell phone chatting-FB updating-BFF texting-late-sipping-jackass-cage drivers in their hermetically sealed 4,000 lb lethal weapons who feel it is their God-given right to drive however they want to in as many lanes as they like at the same time- that I am here and don't want to die because you can't be bothered to HANG UP and DRIVE.

that is the point of loud(er) pipes. Notice I didn't say un-restricted pipes or no silencers, because those are obnoxious and disrespectful of the environment, IMHO. I want to enjoy the ride, not ruin it for everyone around ,e.

NOW, that being said, when I worked nites and kept odd hours, I also posted the following notice to my neighbors on my block:

Aloha! I frequently commute on a motorcycle. If the noise from my bike is too loud or bothers you, please let me know so that I can change my riding patterns. Thank you
-Me

My usual routine was to pop the clutch and let it roll until I was down the hill and out of the subdivision. So no, I am not one of "those guys"

As for f1, it's a race track. We don't come to hear a salad shooter shoot out.

The "justification" for overly loud exhausts is an argument usually advanced by owners of motorcycles with unduly loud exhausts.
Most car drivers won't hear a motorcycle, no matter how loud the pipes, because they have all the windows up and are doing one or more of the behaviours mentioned. (love the "latte-sipping-jackass-cage" bit!)
This won't change anytime soon and motorcyclists who want to survive quickly learn a range of protective behaviours. I rode a MC daily until my 40s.
Nobody goes to a racetrack thinking it won't be noisy, it's a question of how noisy.
I would prefer to not need ear-plugs.

I expect things to be loud at racetracks. And I know enough physics to know that loud pipes really don't save lives, but they do get the driver's attention.

Sorry, I should have added "makeup applying"....
Didn't notice your avitar.

Oh well

Plenty to like about f1 besides the sound
