Interesting observation...But why?
I've always worn my sub date and GMT Master II swimming whether in a pool, snorkling or non wetsuit diving... hundreds of times needless to say. Being watch guys (and gals), I know we have all visually admired our beauties underwater appreciating the distortions and whatnot. What I noticed today oddly enough for the first time is underwater, the magnified date loses its magnifying properties. Any optic professionals know why this happens? One would think the magnifying properties of water + the date bubble would equal a bigger positive, but it appears to cancel everything out.

Nice observation. I wonder if it's the same in salt water as it in in fresh water. Mm. Better schedule a trip to Hawaii

The refractive index for H2O and Sapphire or glass are almost the same where as air is quite a bit different (for example 1.4 for glass and water and 1.0 for air) so by removing the air in the model the light is no longer refracted and there is no longer magnification.

The cyclops loses its convex shape and magnifying properties as the surrounding void is filled with water.

This was part of the Rolex strategy for the new smaller cyclops mag... to more closely replicate an authentic underwater tool watch experience

No wonder my BLNR had had a small magnified date all this time... must be the result of my drool every time I look at my watch.
