what watch to buy when….

We are expecting a baby boy and I wonder if I should either - commemorate his birth by buying myself a watch - or buy him a watch for when he is all grown up.

What did you gentleman ( and / or ladies ) do?

The kind of watches I would be looking at would probably be a modern Tudor - or an Omega Speedmaster ( I was born in the summer of '69, just after moon landings and was named Neil….)

Buy yourself the watch with his birth date on the paperwork.. Then when your son turns 18, give him the watch. I would probably go with the Omega Speedmaster for it being so timeless and iconic.

I bought my submariner upon the birth of my son a couple of years ago and the plan is for me to wear it until he "becomes a man" and then it will be given to him. I will buy a watch for myself at that point and he will get that one when I pass away.

Hey, huge congrats in advance!

Please take a quick look at my thread as it may give you some ideas.

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=427325

I decided to buy the watch now so it is a 'birth year' watch for him but I have chosen to wear the watch for the next 20 or so years so he grows up associating the watch as 'dads watch' this will hopefully give it even more sentimental value. I will then send it off for a service just before I give it to him so it looks brand new!

I didn't place too much emphasis on getting the warranty card to read his birth date as I was a little bit busy that day to say 'hey sweetie I'm just popping in to town for a few hours to go and buy a watch' - No chance! I personally feel it is the year that matters. That way you can say this watch is 21 years old and I bought it to celebrate your birth...

I love the idea of a Speedmaster that's quite cool. It's also a timeless classic. That's why I chose the 36mm DJ.

Best of luck

Please keep us updated and post lots of pics.

Actually just went through this with my first born son. I purchased a watch for my son with the papers dated on his birthdate 7/11/15. I first wore the watch the day he entered the world, took his first breath and first held him in my arms.

My father was the 1st, Im a 2nd and my son is a 3rd so my goal is to give it to my son on his wedding day with the understanding he will carry on the family name and his first born son will be the 4th. Hopefully I can start a family tradition that will go multiple generations.

AP is a special brand for me. I got matching APs for my wife and I on our wedding day and even spent part of our honeymoon in Le Brasses at the AP museum and manufacture. In talking with AP the goal is to send the watch back to Le Brasses and have them create a custom rotor with our family crest engraved on it for a more personal touch and add a little more sentimental value.

Go with a watch that has a lot of sentimental value for you or maybe has a good story and it will mean that much more to your son when you pass it down.

I buy watches for myself. If someone wants them in the future then so be it.

If cash was not the final decision maker which of these would you buy and why. Nice problem to have is not really the answer I am looking for either! LOL. Thanks for all thoughts & opinions!

Thanks for the suggestions guys……still undecided about how to proceed. So I think I might just start putting away some cash every month, and buy a decent watch when the pot is fat enough. ( manual wind Speedmaster is the front runner, a good gift I think, for a kid being born into this new digital world. )

I bought a (manual wind) Speedy Moonphase to commemorate the birth of my first son. To me, the Speedy is a great combination of a classic watch packed with a ton of value.

Stopped by the shops today and tried on a few watches…..and the Tudor Heritage Chrono really sings. But so does the Speedmaster Professional - not just the watch, but the whole package!

Another idea..

Put the money into a savings account / stock account / fund, then give it to him to buy a watch with when he is of age

That way he will get the one he wants, which will be with the current time, and may even have more to spend if the fund appreciated by a decent amount

when...

So some 9 months later I am reviving an old thread.

Well the baby arrived safe and sound, but I soon had a reality check when it came to my finances - and the idea of celebrating with a new watch was kicked into touch. Until now that is.

So I decided to pull the trigger on a Seiko Prospex SRP775. For starters it is totally affordable at around £200 - and it makes a nice beater alternative to my Tudor Sub. I like the heritage angle - with Seiko some what faithfully drawing on the Turtle line to produce an affordable and almost indestructible tool watch.
I'll wear it, abuse it and, if it's still working, pass it to my son on his 14th birthday. If he likes watches I'll make sure he gets something decent on his 21st…..how does that sound?

Still getting used to the watch's size……it seems enormous and on my skinny wrists the silicon strap is tightened to the last hole! I'll be changing it to a Nato soon, other than that, it feels like a lot of watch for a relatively modest price.

hahha, I never thought of that! Lets hope he's not as skinny as his old man. And anyway its more of a symbolic gift.
