Rude 'how much is it' contribution
At work yesterday, I was dealing with a regular client of ours. A little backstory, he is known as a bullshi**er amongst all of my coworkers. He walks in with a new Movado that I've never seen him wear before. My dad loves Movado and he's had his for over 20 years and the thing still ticks. So I proceeded to compliment his watch with what he responded "2000 dollar watch, no big deal." I chuckled and moved on. I step outside and walk back in to a buddy of mine who is recently starting to get into watch culture talking to him about his watch, 'oh dear' I say to myself. He's going on about how Movado uses Rolex metals and how Movado uses stronger steel than Rolex. I don't say anything, because I'm diplomatic and don't want to offend this arrogant imbecile, after all he is a repeat client and he sends people to us as well. My other coworker gestures to me and says "have you seen his Rolex" and I quickly become uncomfortable. He says "yeah I've seen it" and continues by saying "where'd you get that, at an alley?" At this point I'm still diplomatic and I try to diffuse the situation quickly. Then he goes on and says "how much are your payments on that thing?" And follows by "no really, how much is it" I told him the MSRP and left the room. It was a quite uncomfortable and rude experience.

Tough situation...I think you handled it as well as could have been expected.

Never really answer
The few times that has happened to me my response is along the lines " I got it used so it wasn't that much". The only time my conversations about watches involve money is when I'm adding something to my modest collection.

There's no right or wrong way to handle situations like this. Since he's a client you have to exercise patience which it sounds like you did.

Boy, this dude seems rough to deal with on many fronts. The only people I'll talk actual figures with is one of by brothers (fellow WIS) and others here on the forum since it's mostly a mutual appreciation.

Don't feel bad, buddy.I had a guy ask me if I was a drug dealer when he saw me wearing my DayDate......I told him I was in human trafficking(with a very serious face).

The "How would I know how much it costs? I got it off a dead guy." always seems appropriate in these situations.

I'd say something to the effect that the cost is irrelevant, and that the piece is priceless to you

It sounds like he was intentionally trying to get a rise out of you - if you let him get to you, he wins. Next time just say it was a gift, then you can claim ignorance on price and point of sale.

That is very irritating. You handled it better than I probably would. There are those people all around though.

When people get like that about Rolex it's all just deep-seeded jealousy.

Very well may be the cause!
Pretty weird how people can get like this and let jealousy eat them inside out. If I see a friend or whatever with a nice watch, before I even got my Rolex, I'd genuinely be happy for them and it would just push me to work harder for mine. Maybe the fact that I'm barely 20 years old and doing better than him probably made it even worse for him.. |

I have been asked at work a couple of times about the cost of my watch. My standard answer - "It's really quite affordable. Less than my boat or my ATV, way less than all my dive gear".
Context tends to diffuse the perception that a fine watch is more exceptional than any other hobby. In all instances I got the "Ahhh..." look when they realized my watch is no different than their expensive vacations or high end toys. |

Sometimes I wonder how people have progressed through life acting as they do. The fact that some are gainfully employed acting worse than children amazes me.

he is a client so can be as rude as he likes and you just say what he wants you to hear
would probably go along with his idea that you are having to buy it through monthly payments then he will not think he is paying you too much

You did the right thing minimizing the potential conflict and moving on. The guy sounds like a winner but hey, if he gives you business and directs business to you, what else can you do? Setting him straight might feel good but is not going to erase his genes and upbringing and make him a nice guy.

At the same time, it was so arrogant of him to say that I didn't want to completely make it look like I didn't work hard for it. I like to take pride in the things I work hard for. Seems like the safe way out though is to say it's fake or something to that affect.

I work in car sales for Lexus and sometimes I get a jackass who says something like "You must make huge commissions selling these cars to be wearing that watch". My response is always "No, I make very little per car but I sell a lot of cars and my clients keep coming back and sending me referrals". Usually that shuts them up.
