The heirloom piece experience

Hi, many of us love our rolex pieces and hope to one day pass it on to a loved one so that he/she will treasure and cherish the special watch that has so much history, memories and which is so dear to your heart. However, after stumbling into one of the youtube videos from andy hunter "adriqos", he did mention that the said loved one may just think that your special rolex is a piece of junk.

So guys, whether you are the giver or receiver, what's your heirloom piece experience?

Did the receiver love and treasure it? Did the receiver even know or care what a rolex is? Was the receiver keeping it in the drawer (out of politeness) but wouldn't be caught dead wearing it?

Let's hear your thoughts.

As a receiver, my fathers 1960's DD is probably one of my belongings I cherish the most. I use it on special occasions and definitely will be passed on to the next generation. I think we have to educate our children to appreciate material things, that expensive things in life don't come easy, and in my case my fathers watch is more than just a watch, it was part of his life and my life... If only this watch could talk...
Anyway, this is where I get my passion and appreciation for Rolex...

I've already penciled in the three watches I will give to my son on his

16th - Explorer
18th - SeaDweller
21st - Daytonna

The question I ask myself will he desire them as much as I did when I was his age?

Who knows whether our kids will lust after / appreciate Rolex's as much as us when they are older?

In the meantime I've got a birthyear DJ for my son to give him on his 21st / graduation etc but also have my Sub that i'll leave for him when i'm gone.

As my dad is still with us, i've not been a receiver. But he does have a vintage Speedmaster which I presume will be coming my way and that will be a treasured watch because it is the watch that I associate with him.

As children become adults their personalities evolve beyond our expectations; my experience is that one of my adult children is responsible and one not. As a result one child is worthy of receipt of expensive things and the other would allow them to become lost, ruined, or simple currency of less that their value. Believe me that this is not an easy thing to admit, it is an admission of failure in a life work; such is parenthood.

Regarding the question of receipt of parents heirlooms aside from antiques and diamond jewelry from my parents which were handed down from my grand parents and my great uncle (a NY state supreme court judge), I've also received a couple of watches, one a sixties gold Bulova and the other a Tiffany pocket watch of unknown date. I value these both with great sentimentality. One was my father's dress watch and the pocket watch I'm not really certain of its age or which family member used it. Since my Dad was born in '09 and graduated from college in 1930 it could have been his, his father's or my great uncles.

I think that even though most younger gen' would want electronic timekeepers, that someone who raised their children around watches would probably love their fathers/grandfathers watch, especially a valuable Rolex.

I didn't get a Rolex but did get this 18 kt heirloom. My jeweler showed what's inside...

This 50's Breitling was gifted this after my Grandfather's passing. I held it for maybe 30 years before having it restored. I received it back just in time to wear to my own daughter's wedding this past Summer. It means a lot to me.

Smart man. You can raise a bunch of kids the same way and they all turn out a bit different. Such is life. Do not beat yourself up about it so long as you did what you thought was best.

I received it when he passed in '84.
Was on my wrist when I said my finale goodbyes to him.
Timed my wife's contractions with it during her labor with our son.
It was 4:42 when the delivery nurse handed me my son in '97.



Keep a watch for your kid, it will mean a lot to them.

Agree 100%, my daughter was born at 442am too, 2014! And had my GMT on my wrist.

I received my fathers and grandfathers 5512 this year
It is a great experience wearing it and when my
Brother went out of town for work i gave it to him to wear untill he got his own rolex as he sold me his two tone datejust

I spoke with his girlfriend recently and she told me
Everytime he looks at the watch it reminds him of home and family :)

No better heirloom imo. A watch is very personal. It can represent so many things, and is a trusty companion through all of life's ups and downs. A watch becomes a part of someone. This piece was a wedding gift earlier this year (worn then) and was on my wrist for the birth of daughter/first child this past weekend. When the time is right I will pass it along to her so she'll always have a piece of her dad with her.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter, it's the greatest gift from life. I agree with you about a watch becoming part of one.
