1675 insert clarification...

I'm trying to understand the differences in vintage insert for the 1675. I'm relatively sure both of mine are "fat" font. I know there are super fat font inserts but I'm curious if there are "skinny" (service) inserts and such. Which would be (most) correct for a 1970' 1675?

The top one is black, right? Not blue?

Blacks were rare at beginning of 70s, Pepsi for then should be fatter though there were some thinner fonted inserts then

I would keep the black AND get a fat Pepsi and swap back and forth

It's black with a nice bluish fade to it. I don't wear the Pepsi much so I probably will stick with this one. I'm jut curious about what's considered period correct.

There weren't black inserts being used on GMTs in 1970. Late 70s, but nothing is documented regarding black inserts being around during the 1960s to early 1970s. Neither one of the inserts in the photos are correct for a 1970 GMT.

I read 72' was the introduction of the black bezel. So would the correct Pepsi insert be "super" fat font?

This was discussed a while ago on a couple forums. The earliest Rolex documentation we found was from 1976 or 1977. It's discussed in a thread on rolexvintageforum.com along with some photos of the GMTs with black inserts.

If you have something substantive that indicates the black inserts were used earlier, I'd love to see it. Send me a PM if you find something that I can take a look at.

I wouldn't consider a super fat font insert correct for 1972. Should be a fat font.

I'm not too bothered by wearing a bezel that didn't/couldn't come on the watch (afterall I wear it on leather or NATOs most of the time) but I might eventually try to find one that is correct just to complete the set.

I believe the comments referenced in your links are opinions, like mine...LOL. Actually, my opinion is based on documented Rolex material referenced in the thread I previously mentioned. Again, if you have something substantive, not what someone wrote or believes, regarding black inserts being available on GMTs in 1972 or earlier, I'd like to see it and include it in my records.

No, this is all just Google Fu, I'm sure there is some more solid intel on VRF but that site is a bit dense for me, and it's all academic anyway since either way it's post 1970. How about the pic? Is that a correct fat font Pepsi bezel?

Your insert has seriffs and is not a fat font. Actually, it looks like a blue-back insert - you might want to check the back of it.

Below are a few fat fonts, 1-6 and a few others. The GMT with the fuchsia insert is a fat font.
