Owning a Rolex - The gift and the curse
As of June 1, 2015. I did not own a single Rolex and after hanging out here for a little over six months I ended the year with more than one.
Not loving one of them, I figured I'd bring some variety into my small collection, after all, it is the spice of life. So with the proceeds of the sale of my BLNR (sorry fans) I set out to fill an empty slot. Looked at Omega, Breitling and a few others within budget. There was nothing. I kept coming back to the Rolex section over and over again and it seems that until I am able to step-up I won't be able to side-step. So in order to start 2016 with the right foot I am seeking the input of my fellow TRF members for my next and hopefully not last acquisition. Edit: Current lineup - Sub C , Tudor BB Blue, Seiko Cocktail Time and Seiko 5 Sport both JDM version, Longines La Grande Classique Auto. Wife: 114200 , Movado Museum Red Label and a few Seiko Autos. |

I voted rhodium OP but for me it's a toss up between that and the blue.

I have got the Rhodium. I call it slate, but what do I know.
I have it on today. Love it. I like blue as well. I also love the Exp. But my money goes to the one I am wearing.

I've branched out far and wide but always seem to gravitate back to Rolex and Patek.

Very humble collection - The only pieces worth mentioning are the Sub C , The Black Bay Blue and my wife's 114200 - The BLNR was an impulse buy/gift from the wife, I couldn't grow to love it.

What is it you don't like about the BLNR? Are you looking for dressy or a sports watch? What price range?

I don't dress up often and when I do, I usually go no watch or wear the Longines - So sporty. Price Range - I freed up a little over $8K but if I can get a watch and a vacation out of this, even better. No money out of pocket for this one. |

How about the Polar Explorer. It's a great watch in its own right and would compliment the Sub and BBB nicely.

I love the rhodium dialed OP, and a huge upgrade over previous OPs. But something about the EXI just seems more special to me. Maybe the history and draw to the vintage explorers, I would have a hard time taking the OP over an EXI even though I find the EXI a little plain.

I voted Exp, but that is because it is a classic. I do like the purple grape, not so much as an every day watch but when you want something unique and fun but still has some street cred. I'd imagine it would be a great conversation piece.

39mm OP Grape.
As blue/black/gray already exist in you collection, a new color is what you need. Could be worn by your wife, too |

I picked the Exp I but none of these have been high on my radar. I am not in love with the new OP dials. I prefer the more vanilla OP's. In my opinion the grape dial has always looked like it belongs in the lady's pearl master line. I asked my AD if it was a dial that was more likely to be bought by a man or a woman and he said a woman. Having said that it could probably grow on me over time. But without the influence of TRF I wouldn't be drawn to it. I've seen myself change my opinion about other models as I've seen posts about and pictures of them here. To me the second and third would be Rhodium and then Blue but they would lag behind the Exp I by a significant margin. Grape would be way behind those unless I was looking for my wife and then I'd flip the whole list and the grape would lead the pack by a significant margin.
