Super Bowl 50...Ring vs a Rolex?

as we all know, heavy gold rings encrusted with diamonds are the traditional players, coaches & owners rewards for winning a championship series like the NFL/Super Bowl & MLB/World Series et al.

truth is some guys don't wear rings (or even like them). I've heard that most championship rings cost around $10K or so. if a team were to substitute an engraved Rolex in lieu of a championship ring, how much (or what model) would $10K cover as far as a Rolex is concerned?

I haven't bought a new watch or Rolex in years & so I am somewhat unacquainted with the current price revisions. to me, a nice watch would certainly be more practical than a gaudy ring.

$10k is a bit less than msrp for a SeaDweller in steel.

I think the superbowl and rings are so inextricably linked...you'd have a hard time switching to watches...

The typical championship ring made for the NFL is approx $35k. If you wanted to get that same degree of bling in a watch I think you would be looking somewhere in the area of 50k. Not only is the ring a time honored tradition, but it's also the cheaper alternative and until recently the only logical gift.

Wouldn't that be a violation of NCAA rules?

I hope Panerai gets the contract to supply watches.

Can you imagine some NFL players in 36mm DateJusts? ;-)

$35K is a bit high (with the possible exception of the NE Patriots ring that ran about $32K). the NFL chips in $5K towards each ring & the owners make up the difference depending on how much they wish to spend altogether.

as a result, most of them run around $10K to $12/$15K initially & sports memorabilia collectors push the appraised values upwards.

the loser of the Super Bowl receives a smaller AFC/NFC championship ring. the only exception was in SB XLV when the Steelers received Bulovas for winning the AFC.

tradition aside, $15K would cover a pretty nice Rolex & I imagine there would be a group discount for such a large purchase (roughly 150).

The players in the NFL are all zillionaires and can buy their own bling very easily, so the ring is more about prestige amongst their peers that have not been to the mountaintop and less to do with how much it costs

I think it's an interesting thought, but it'd be too hard to pick a model that suits every players taste.

You can buy a super bowl ring from some high end pawn shops for around 50k depending on which team and what year ring.

I dont think you can ever get a SDc with an en-gravment or even a factory approved custom logo for the NFL exclusive would ever be worth as much. Also rings are iconic as players and coaches with multiple rings can wear them all at once. Its kind of like a sports slap you in the face type of thing.

I've heard in some sports, championship winning organizations end up giving their players a Rolex watch in addition to the ring.

The ring though has always been tradition and 10 out of 10 players would rather have a championship ring than a watch.

The ring is like an Olympic Gold Medal. Only a select few get them. They come with bragging rights. Anyone with money can buy a watch.

Yes but what if we gave Olympic gold medalists a hublot instead? Forget Ye medals and have this kingbangboom in Rose gold!

Bowl games are authorized to give players SWAG worth up to 500 dollars. These days it's heavy electronics etc. it's a nice perk froths players and managers too.

They are not all zillionaires. A few are. Kickers, punters, some back ups, long snappers, and special teams players make a paltry NFL Minimum 450K prorated over 17 weeks, 10% to the agent. 39% to the man.
Sounds more reasonable when broken down like that.

I hate rings in general, but I'd say ring all the way.

A Rolex looks like a Rolex. A SB ring looks like a gigantic lump of gold on the finger.
