Speedmaster versus Explorer II
Guys and Gals, I want to switch things around a bit and get a new piece for my birthday which is coming up (Feb 20th)
I just sold my Tudor Black Bay because it was getting zero wrist time since the arrival of the Hulk. I am currently trying to decide between a 16570 Black Dial with the 3186 and a Moonwatch 3570.50.00 I like them both equally and I'd like your opinions regarding which you would choose and why. My current line up: 116610 LN & LV , a number of JDM Seiko and a few daily beaters. Thanks ! Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

You can't go wrong with either, but I'd get the Speedmaster since you already have 2 Sub Dates. What about a Polar instead of a black dial 16570?

Depends on what you want since they're two totally different watches:
-40mm vs 42mm -GMT vs chrono -water resistant vs not really -automatic movement vs manual wind Prefer the 16570. Sold my sapphire sandwich not because I hated winding that particular crown (too flush to the case making it uncomfortable to wind). If you did get a Speedy, I'd suggest looking at the hesalite model (3573.50). I wasn't a fan initially, but there's something really nice and warm about that slightly domed crystal. The sapphire sandwich is nice as well, but is flat, a little "cooler" and has a "ring-like appearance" bordering the crystal because of the shape. |

I would go with the 16570 ExpII. While I really like the Speedmaster I love the ExpII.
I love the ruggedness and the GMT function. I would use that a lot more than the chrono.

Between a Speedy and an Explorer... I'd pick the Daytona. Yeah, I know, not an offered option? But the Speedy is a chrono, and the natural rival is the Daytona. If it has to be Speedy or Explorer, then Speedy.

Speedmaster versus Explorer II
If you're undecided on your next piece, I believe it'll be the same story as the Black Bay - it'll get zero wrist time and you'll end up flipping it.
I would save your money for something that truly catches your eye and would make you say, "that, that is my next watch." This is the true WIS mentality. But... The 16570 gets my vote. It's the most comfortable Rolex I have tried and that's why I own one.

Those are quite different watches. Explorer is more robust construction and would get my vote among those 2

I see that you have covered the date zone with your subs. you neither have a GMT nor a Chrono.... and i believe that both are needed in any collection
So between the Exp. and the Speedy, and considering the collection you have, i would start with the Speedy, then add a GMT function watch. The Speedmaster is not as tough as the Explorer, but they are different watches. (And you already have other "Tough" watches) |

Speedy Pro. So versatile when you buy it on the bracelet and have a few leather straps for it.
As far as the date, I have used one of the sub dials for the date, it worked perfectly.

I have the black 16570 as well as the hesalite sandwich, I would trade the Explorer before I let my Speedy Pro go.

I prefer polar Explorer, but if you are deciding between black dial and Omega, I think I would go Omega moon watch

Speedmaster gets my vote. The explorer II is a nice watch, but the speedmaster is a nice watch with a history that's tough to beat.

I would get the Polar 40mm Explorer II. I love my Speedmaster 3570.50, but rarely find an occasion to use the chronometer function. I bought it 15 years ago because of the history behind the model. Just put a Hirsch strap on it to liven it up.

These are my two watches so I feel pretty qualified to answer. In my case I have had the Soeedmaster 145.022 (predecessor to 3570 but essentially same watch) for 5 years now. My 16570 Exp II I've had for a few weeks now. I love both, but give the nod in your case to the Speedmaster. It's iconic and the hesalite crystal, matte dial, manual winding, and history make for a charming package. If I had to only have one, it would win out.
However I will go against the grain and suggest you flip one of your subs and pick up both the Speedmaster and 16570 Explorer II. Then you would have a pretty great 3 watch collection. I'll shoot a pic with both side by side later. |
