Rolex Bluesy Sub...

So...seems like there are a lot of these threads out here, might as well chime in with my own agonizing first world problem. I've always wanted a bluesy sub, and originally had my heart on a 16613. Then, after looking long and hard at 16618's, I started to lust after them. (along with 1680/8's blue face, those are impossibly out of my budget)

Now I already have a solid gold Rolex OQ, and I'm back on the fence between the 16613 and 16618. I am close to pulling the trigger on a 16613, but I'm afraid if I do I will have buyer's remorse and want the all gold version instead anyway.

Thoughts? Anyone been down this road before?

yesterday I bought a 116613 but I would not choose an all gold, I like the steel / gold combination

Yup I'm here right now.
I have LV sub and just got LN to wear on straps only....

And my next itch was for sunburst blue YM but the bezel is ugly.

So bluesy has that sunburst blue and I have no YG in my collection.

But I'm waiting for Basel to see what comes out.
I bought the chocolate Daytona 2 months befor Rolex announced RG YM.
After the fact I regretted but after putting the 116515 on a chocolate rubber b, that RG YM can't hang at all. In fact it's overpriced by 8k AND the stupid strap doesn't fit to the case lol.

So could I have LN, LV and LB? Yup. But I'd rather not have 3 subs.

Hoping for a ceramic bezel sunburst blue Daytona on YG?

What's your budget I'm ready to buy new for under 10k.

What kind of other metals do you wear? Silver ring, belt buckles, etc.? If yes, then the TT is the way to go. But if you only wear gold, then go for the gold if you can afford it.

As for affordability. I can comfortably afford the 16613, the 16618 I would have to wait another year or possibly two. That's another reason I've been reconsidering the two-tone...I love both models, but if someone held out both to me, one in each hand, and asked me to take my preference, it would unquestionably be the solid gold. But then again, I have a solid gold watch already. I still get the look and the dial I want, just in a TT package (let's face it, it's a gorgeous watch either way).

I'd be inclined to save for the 16618. Personally I like the yellow gold / blue (can be bit more purplish with age as we know with the 16613/8) combined effect. I find that there's more going on visually with the two-tone and I don't like that with these blue submariners. That's just me. Many/most will disagree.

I *do* like two tone jubilee bracelet watches. Can't really explain why, but they just work. More so in real life than in photos.

Have you posted anything in this forum about your Gold Oysterquartz before? I'd be really interested to hear the thoughts of a long-term owner.

Thanks for the interest and the comments. The OQ has been a great piece that is fun to wear, dressy while a bit under-the-radar at 36mm, and the fact that it keeps perfect time and I don't have to wear it everyday to maintain that are huge bonuses. I use a Movado gold plated museum watch for daily wear at the office (that thing gets enough attention, sometimes too much). But oddly enough, in all the time I've worn the OQ, I've never had a single comment on it. The Movado has garnered dozens of compliments over the years.

...I guess if people do notice the OQ they just don't say anything...Mind you, where I'm from there aren't a lot of Rolexes flying around here. I've seen three excluding mine and I've been a watch aficionado my whole life.

To get back to the debate versus 16613/16618, here is another thing I find myself mulling over: Looking in my jewelry chest, would I want the option to wear a TT watch? Right now it's between gold or gold. With the 16618 it would gold, gold.....or gold. So would I just rather go for another gold and make the decision that much more simple or diversify a bit, all the while being able to finally soak in that beautiful sunburst blue I've been lusting after for ages?

If this is the case, I would suggest you to get the 16613. After two years, if you want the 16618 then trade for it. At least you enjoy wearing the watch two year earlier.

I have both, I wear the TT more than the solid gold version. For me it was not an option to have one or the other as I really wanted both.

Instead of waiting a year I would grab the TT.

I actually like the TT Bluesy better (lucky for me) - As far as TT goes it's probably the best.

OP, Interesting nobody has commented on your OQ!

Back to the Bluesy.

It's definitely a dilemma. If you were choosing between a gold or two tone GMT, then your choice would be simpler. The former is supposedly in your face and the latter is supposedly restrained and subtle indulgence.

With the Bluesy, It's Complicated. Doesn't matter whether you buy the solid gold or TT versions, they're both regarded by many misguided souls as being archetypal Dirty Old Men Watches. In which case might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb!

That minor consideration aside, if you're certain that the blue sunburst dial mesmerisation effect dominates any gold bug or T-T concerns by an order of magnitude, then it's the 16613 for you!

The TT might offer you more flexibility, and wrist time.

I had the TT sub for almost 17 years, and traded it up for the 16618 late last year. There's no comparison. The weight and look of the all-gold is amazing. If you don't want to wait you can always TT now and trade-up later. I recommend getting a z-serial 16618 or whatever other other serials get you the rehaut and no-holes case. Trusted seller here is the way to go (special thanks to Tony G, justrolexes for mine).

If you can save and get the 618 in 6 months I would. If it will take considerably longer then I'd get the 613, and then you can sell it later for not much loss if you buy right, for the 618 if you want.

Most places are sitting around $9K CDN which I think is reasonable for a no-holes mid-oughties 16613 with gold through clasp and in good shape. 16618's on the other hand are pushing mid $20's any condition. Needless to say, those are two different buying levels for watches, of which I can only aspire to one. (right now that is)

Go for the 613 now and you'll be surprised how quickly you will save the funds for a trade up if you stay on TRF.

I also own a blue sunburst tt sub. I think it is one of the most iconic pieces that Rolex makes. I definitely enjoy mine.

Also depends how often you will wear it and the amount of "danger" it will be exposed to. The most exposed part on the 16613 are in steel and hence have a higher resistance to scratches, dents etc...
