Rolex beats up AP!
Slightly misleading title to this thread I'm afraid but at least it got your attention!! And actually, there is a link...
About a year ago my wife saw a Royal Oak in the flesh and finally got the 'watch thing'. We made a decision there and then that she would stop paying her £1k per month into our joint bills account, and whilst I covered her contribution, she would save her £1k per month and then buy 'us' a Royal Oak when the funds were there, and then this would be followed by a Patek Nautilus. We were due to go to London next month for a weekend to buy the AP. Excitement has been building in our house for a little while now and the one thing I DID NOT WANT was for Rolex to launch a Ceramic SS Daytona, as I knew this would mean a tough decision was required! And then yesterday happened! The second it was announced, my good lady and I had a two minute chat and the Daytona was ordered! We will still aim to get the RO and the Nautilus, but they will have to wait. I have noticed on the various threads that I am not alone; there appears to be at least a handful of people that were about to take the plunge on a RO and have now decided (or are considering at least) to go for the Daytona instead. In all my time of watching this forum, I have never seen such a consistent trend. It's especially curious as they are not even similarly priced, there is £4k - £5k difference in price.

I have the RO and SS white daytona and to be honest they are very very different watches The RO has more class than a french finishing school it just sparkles on the wrist. You can spot an RO from 50 feet. Where as the Daytona as lovely as it is is not in the same league.... The RO is a suit watch no doubt, with the Daytona being more practical But if your looking for that WOW feeling just put the RO on your wrist and roll it in sunlight then you'll know what I mean

I remember when you put your plan in place.
I think I would prefer the new Daytona first as well. If you're able to add a RO and Nautilus down the road - that's damn near perfection! |

I will then just be chasing a birth year 5513 with a nicely faded bezel and great patina...after that, the good lady assures me we will have proven we don't need her cash and she is planning on very early retirement!!

Good advice, I've put my name down for the Daytona altho I know I am up against the oligarchs and sheikhs so we will see. Might have to ring up some smaller town ADs later on if I decide it's for me.

The Daytona and Nautilus would be the perfect combo, in my opinion.

Based on your collection, I think the new Daytona and the RO (and later on, the Nautilus) will nicely co-exist there. So it's only beating in the short run :) Happy hunting!

Daytona and Royal Oak would be a solid combination, the nautilus looks similar to the royal oak you do not need to buy it.

Nautilus and RO created by design genius Gérald Genta, I have owned and loved both. I prefer the looks of the RO, but you can't go wrong either way.

Frankly I'd do it the opposite way. Get the PP Nautilus first, then the RO, and finally the 116500 when demand has died down.

Sound advice, but it's flawed as it's coming from you, you know these aren't PM watches right????

Thanks for the comments everyone, and for the pictures of your fine watches Kilyung.
I'm happy to bide my time for the AP and Patek, they are worth waiting for. Likewise the 5513, which will be the final piece of the jigsaw. It's interesting listening to the different views re what's best. Personally, I like Sports watches and as such the three makers in question lead the way in my view. When it then comes down to which of the three is best, I'm not sure there is a right answer. Patek win for me in terms of craftsmanship, AP in terms of aesthetic design, and Rolex for being a pioneer over the last 100 years and for producing such a good blend of design, quality, and durability. My views are based on having owned five Rolexes but only on handling AP and Patek, so others here like Mike are far more qualified than me to speak on the subject of which is best. In simple car terms, Rolex would be Porsche (supremely capable, timeless design), the AP would be Ferrari (droolworthy, a step up from the Porsche in many ways, but not as bulletproof so a bit of a trade-off), and PP would be Rolls (great craftmanship, but for most people reserved for special occassions). Of course there are others such as Lange, JLC, IWC that aren't in my mix but have a place in any such discussion.

Royal Oak is a damn fine timepiece!
I'd get that (or the Nautilus) first and then the Daytona when demand is slower. Goodluck! |

Resale value talks my friend rolex is rolex man rolex talk it's like comparing a jag to lexus or Mercedes-Benz to lexus lexus is yes new to the luxury car market but you can't dinai that is very powerful competitor to the other and now in the same level there is nothing that they can't do like a jag or a merc. And rich people still buy a lexus they can buy merc or jag or Bentley but that what they prefer you can't tell it's different league. Don't lie to your self that ap do a better watch or patek do better than ap or rolex it's all about what you prefer no body will force you to choose if you ask rolex they will say we are the best if you ask ap the they will say we are the best. We in 2016 so no body is better than another.

With Daytona only being like $12k, I see no reason not to add both. You can get RO or Naut tomorrow (plenty to be had), so grab one, enjoy it and then just grab SS Daytona later this year when it comes out.
Pretty simple to me. |

Vince, why not buy the AP now like you planned? Continue your current saving plan. And when the CE Daytona comes out later this year, you'll have most of the $ saved up for the CE.
Win-win for you and the wifey! |

the new Daytona is awesome! it finally made me take the plunge and join the daytona club but it wont be a few months or years from now until I can get my hands on it. Id say get the AP first then Daytona if its available now if its not still then Nautilus just like Kilyung said. There is something about the dial that transfixes you.
