Explorer II with 3186 cal
Hi, all, came across some articles in web saying Explorer II may come with 3186. Any idea how true it is and how to test it (wiggle test again?)? thanks

It's true...
The latest Explorer II's are outfitted with the 3186. This apparently is the standard GMT movement for Rolex now.

This one is an M, and it passes the wiggle test.

Here's my "M"/3186 that not only passed the "wiggle" test but also the "eyeball" test":

Yes it has 3186.
When you adjust the date by turning the hour hand, all other hands used to move or wiggle quite a bit but not for the 3186.

wiggle test
Yes I have a Z8xxxx serial that passes the wiggle test. There is a cool clip on youtube showing the famous " wiggle test" the difference is very apparenet between the to movements when setting the date.

What am I missing and how exactly does this "Wiggle Test" differ from the older movement?

There is absolutely no functional difference in these two mevements. All Rolex did was move the detent wheel for the Mercedes Jump function away from the hand stack. This now means that when you move the Mercedes hand, there is no interaction or "wiggle" to the 24 hr hand.

While I wouldn't hang my hat on this statement, I would say that any Explorer II with the RBR (rehaut engraving) has a very high likelihood of having the 3186 movement in it.

wiggle
Agreed that the hour hand still has a very slight bounce to it BUT all the 16710 and 16750's with 3185's I have had, (atleast 5) the difference in the wiggle on the GMT hand is very noticable, the GMT hand show's a true bounce/wiggle when setting the hour hand on the 3186 movement there is NO bounce/wiggle to the GMT hand.
I also figure all EXP. II's with rehaut engraving would have the 3186. Now I need to find or maybe someone can make the quick video clip with a 3185 movement setting/moving the hour hand.. |

Wiggle 3185 test
Found this youtube vid, a little boring but towards the end he shows how to set the date and hour hand and you can clearly see the difference between the 3185 and 3186 movement while setting, the hour hand also has significant bounce/wiggle to it.

when you pulled it all the way to second click, then wiggle test does not apply.
