Anybody have a Rolex Explorer 1016 dial modded on another model or year explorer?

Hi all,
Since having my own 36mm 14270 Explorer and having the dial LUMED I been wondering would it not be amazing if I could get a spare 1016 dial and have it retrofit on my 14270 caliber 3000. Better yet, have the dial redone and fully LUMED in C3 or a modern vintage LUME.

Heck, I can get an older Air King and I am almost certain the 1016 dial fits right on with no mods needed.

Anybody mod like this yet?

Thank you,
bigC

A 1016 dial, a real one anyway, is an expensive thing. You'll hack it up fitting it to a cal 3000, destroying yet another 1016 dial. It's not like we have an endless supply of them.

A 1016 dial won't fit in a 5500 AirKing case. The 5500 was 34mm, the 1016 was 36mm. There was a 5500 explorer 34mm though.

Yeah, I noticed there are at least 3 Explorer 1016 looking dials on Ebay now with Air King or Oyster Perpetual donor Rolex watches. Most priced under $3K too. So, maybe purchasing one of the already modded ones is the way to go.

Thanks,

And those are probably fake (AKA refinished, aftermarket, whatever)...

Sell your 14270 and buy a real 1016.

Authenticity means everything. And a domed plexi crystal can't be beat.

Amazing 1016 watch you have there.

BTW: the Plexy glass alone go for almost a $1K, so yeah to keep it authentic it cost a lot more than I am willing to spend at the moment which is odd to say in the Rolex forum per say

There are 1016 dials on the popular auction site for $900 if that fits your budget.

I know someone reputable in Hong Kong who sells them for around $65. Not original of course, but the next-best thing for the domed appearance.

I think a person can be able to get a NOS one for approx $200? I only mention it so that OP can properly evaluate his next steps...

Agreed, and then of course its not hard to find an aftermarket Space Dweller dial, might be a good conversation piece.

I have one of the aftermarket Space Dweller dials that I put on a 1018 that had an ugly repaint on it. Be warned, the aftermarket SpaceD dial that I purchased is THICKER than a 1018 dial (probably fits fine on a 1016, which is set up for a thicker dial), so there were some issues with the stem and the movement going back into the case correctly.
